To Wick R. Miller (1932-1994), internationally recognized leader in Uto
aztekan linguistics, whose work on the relationships among Numic lan
guages forms the basis for many of the ideas presented in this volume; and to
Christopher Raven (1943-1994), whose archaeological research in the west
ern Great Basin helped significantly to revise estimates of the time-depth of
historically known Native American life-styles. Both contributed greatly to
the Numic roundtable, to this volume, and to Great Basin anthropology.
Their voices will be missed enormously in the years to come.
