In the nearly ten years it has taken me to complete this book, I have accrued countless debts of gratitude. The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds has provided a convivial and supportive academic home, whilst I am indebted to the Department of Media and Audiovisual Communication at the University Carlos III Concepcin Cascajosa Virino, Carmen Ciller, Ana Mejn, Alejandro Melero, Tamara Moya Jorge, Manuel Palacio, Xos Prieto Souto, Rubn Romero Santos et al. for providing me with an academic home-from-home in Madrid. In my travels, the following have kindly opened their doors to provide more hospitable billeting than any hotel could provide: Betlem Soler Pardo in Valencia, Noelia Iglesias Iglesias in Santiago de Compostela, Mila Lpez Casellas in Granada, Jos Luis Alonso de Santos and Marga Piero in El Puerto de Santa Mara, and Fiona Melville in Sotogrande. Mara Bastianes, Ben Bollig, Maria Delgado, Stuart Green, Helena Migulez-Carbeilla, Rebecca Jarman and Vicente Rodrguez Ortega all generously gave of their time to read draft sections of the book. The critiques of the anonymous reader from Manchester University Press were similarly constructive and smart. Caroline Wintersgill, Jonathan de Peyer and Alun Richards have been first-rate and patient editors.
I carried out over 300 interviews, and am very grateful to all of those who gave of their time freely to talk with me. I have rehearsed various sections at talks delivered at the following institutions: the Universities of Cambridge, Malaga and Oslo; Trinity College Dublin; Kings College London; Universitat Pompeu Fabra; and UCL. The comments and feedback I received have fed into this book in myriad ways, as have the responses of my students on my final-year undergraduate module at Leeds on the Transition. Invitations to provide commentary on the independence debate in Catalonia by BBC Scotland and the London Review of Bookshelped sharpen my thinking on Spains autonomous communities. I am similarly grateful to my editors at Political Quarterlyand Jacobinfor commissioning publications based on my interviews with Alfonso Guerra and Felipe Gonzlez. I would like to record my debt to the librarians and archivists at the following institutions: the British Library; the Brotherton Library, Leeds; the Biblioteca Nacional (Madrid); the Archivo General de la Administracin; the Fundacin Juan March; the Archivo Partido Comunista (Madrid); the Arxiu Nacional de Catalunya; Tate; the Fundacin Pablo Iglesias; the Fundacin de la Transicion; the University of Navarra; the Centro de Investigaciones Sociolgicas; the Fundacin Francisco Franco; the Institut del Teatre; the Museo Picasso; the Fundacin Joan Mir; the Fundaci Gala-Salvador Dal; the Archivo General de la Comunidad de Madrid; the Biblioteca de la Plaza de Toros de Valencia; the Museo Reina Sofa; the Fundacin Csar Manrique; the Casa del Carnaval, Santa Cruz; the Biblioteca militar, Toledo; the Ministerio de Cultura; the Municipal Archives of Almera, Baix Llobregat, Barcelona, Bilbao, Burgos, Castelln, Crdoba, Fuengirola, Granada, Gerona, Ibiza Town, Oviedo, Pontevedra, San Sebastin, Teguise, Valencia, Valladolid and Vigo; and the Provincial Archive of Zaragoza.
