How did an African-American man born in a ghetto in 1879 rise to such religious prominence that his followers addressed letters to him simply God, Harlem U.S.A.?Using hitherto unknown materials, Jill Watts portrays the life and career of one of the twentieth centurys most intriguing religious leaders, Father Divine. Starting as an itinerant preacher, Father Divine built an unprecedented movement that by the 1930s had attracted followers across the nation and around the world. As his ministry grew, so did the controversy surrounding his enormous wealth, flamboyant style, and committed angels--black and white, rich and poor alike. Here for the first time a full account of Father Divines childhood and early years challenges previous contentions that he was born into a sharecropping family in the deep South. While earlier biographers have concentrated on Father Divines social and economic programs, Watts focuses on his theology, which gives new meaning to secular activities that often appeared contradictory. Although much has been written about Father Divine, God, Harlem U.S.A. finally provides a balanced and intimate account of his lifes work.

Preface
In 1983 in a master's seminar, I was assigned to do a paper on the African-American minister Father Divine. At the time, what I knew about Father Divine was based on vague memories from an undergraduate history course: Father Divine claimed to be God and founded an aberrational cult that grew to prominence in the ghettos of the northeastern United States during the 1930s. His appeal, I had read, rested basically on the free meals he supplied to his black parishioners and the emotional impact of his sermons. He had complete control over his followers, forcing them to break family ties, practice celibacy, and surrender their savings to his ministry. Although he had garnered much criticism, Father Divine's popularity boomed throughout the 1930s. I remember one impressive story of a letter addressed to GOD, HARLEM, U.S.A. The postman delivered it promptly to Father Divine.
My early research into the secondary literature produced between 1936 and 1954 confirmed many of these common assumptions surrounding Father Divine. But as I read further, I discovered God Comes to America by Kenneth Burnham, a sociologist. Burnham offered the first book-length scholarly analysis of Father Divine and treated his ministry with objectivity and respect. Quoting liberally from Father Divine's sermons, Burnham acknowledged their theological content but chose to focus his analysis on Father Divine's charismatic leadership. I was impressed because he took the minister so seriously when most other accounts were cynical and disparaging.1
