"How to Read Zhang Boshu's Marxism and Human Sociobiology"

Almost immediately after the publication of E. O. Wilson's Sociobiology: The New Synthesis (1975), heated debate arose between sympathizers of Wilson's proposed synthesis and a diverse group of critics who believed that there was something mischievously wrong with even proposing a research agenda that combined evolutionary theory; ethology, and genetics in order to better understand the biological basis of human behavior. Two of the most well-known critics of sociobiology happened to be colleagues of Professor Wilson within the Department of Biology at Harvard University. Professors Stephen Jay Gould (paleobiology) and Richard Lewontin (genetics) were not only two of the most vocal critics of sociobiology, but also they were influential shapers of the debate, insofar as their much publicized sympathy with Marxist political ideology rallied the far left in such a way that Wilson was typecast as someone arguing his thesis from the political perspective of the far right. Ironically, anyone who knows Professor Wilson recognizes that he is virtually apolitical with respect to his professional endeavors in biology and entomology. His inspiration behind writing
