Preface
It is rather surprising that a nineteenth-century English philosopher, who published his main work on the topic of liberty in 1859, should still be so influential in many of the most important contemporary American debates about the role of the state in limiting liberty. Whether the issue is the censorship of pornography, hate speech on college campuses, the legalization of drugs, gay rights, the equality of women, or whether motorcyclists should have to wear helmets, the views of John Stuart Mill are frequently cited.
