Acknowledgments
We are in debt to our families for all the things they have done to make this volume possible.
This book is a product of research, teaching, and support from the Contemporary America Project, Center for Transnational American Studies, the Institute for English, Germanic, and Romance Studies at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The authors are grateful to our colleagues and students for many of the ideas and directions that inform our narrative. Kasper Ekmann gave graciously of his time to research illustrations. The unnamed (and unknown) peer reviewers have been essential in proposing detours, questioning interpretations, and providing strong recommendations for the publication of Contemporary United States: An Age of Anger and Resistance. Clearly, an age of anger and what George W. Bush called a rise of casual cruelty require resistance. This book offers a new interpretation of our present era. While Russell Duncan has overall editorial responsibility for the book and for writing the Introduction, , the final product represents a close collaboration across all chapters.
Our book is better because of the expertise of the superb professionals at Palgrave. Lloyd Langman enthusiastically supported the volume and led a staff who did so much to improve the book during the flip-flop and often incoherent first year of the Trump administration. Tuur Driesser was always there to help us meet deadlines, negotiate for photographs, and offer advice on all aspects of the work. Palgrave production editor Elizabeth Holmes and production manager Sangeetha Sathiamurthy and the copyeditors and typesetters at Integra Software Services competently converted the manuscript into a carefully edited book. We offer our gratitude to all those who made this publication possible.
