Babiker A. Abdalla is a lecturer at the Department of Geography, University of Khartoum and coordinator of a project on Indicators of Environmental Change and Desertification in Kordofan Province sponsored by the Institute of Environmental Studies, Khartoum University and Clark University, USA. Recent publications include 'Demographic and Spatial Growth Patterns of Gezira Settlements' (co-author with S.A.El Arifi), in The Role of Intermediate and Small Centres in the Development of Gezira, Sudan, IIED/SGAHS, London/ Khartoum, 1986.
Tade Akin Aina is currently senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology, University of Lagos. With a degree in Sociology from Lagos University, a masters from the London School of Economics and a doctorate from the University of Sussex (UK), he has been a member of the University of Lagos Human Settlements Study Group since 1980. His recent publications include Popular Settlements in Metropolitan Lagos (co-authored with David Aradeon), Lagos University, 1986.
David Aradeon teaches architectural design and currently heads the Department of Architecture at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. He also directs the research team at this University which has collaborated with IIED since 1977. A graduate of the School of Architecture, Columbia University, USA, he was awarded the NIAE Paris Travelling Prize Award for the best architectural design thesis project. Between 1968 and 1971 he travelled widely in North and West Africa on Ford and Farfield foundation grants, studying human settlements, and the 1977 Festac Exhibition on African Architectural Technology which resulted from his work during these years is now part of the Museum of African Culture in Lagos. Since 1976, he has published several research papers on the problems of human settlements in Africa.
B. S. Bhooshan is a consultant, completing his doctorate at the Institute of Development Studies, Mysore University, India. With a degree in Architecture from Kerala University and a masters in City and Regional Planning from Madras University, his recent publications include: Towards Alternative Settlement Strategies (ed.), Heritage Books, India, 1980, and The Development Experience of Nepal , Concept Publishing, India, 1979.
Omer M. A. El Agraa is currently Dean of the Graduate College and a Professor at the Department of Architecture, University of Khartoum. He also set up and directs the Sudanese Group for Assessment of Human Settlements at Khartoum University which has collaborated with IIED since 1977. With a degree in Architecture from Khartoum University and a doctorate in Building Science from the University of Liverpool, UK, he also chairs the Council on Scientific and Technological Research of the Sudanese National Council of Research and chairs the committee set up by the Minister of Construction and Public Works to revise physical planning, land and municipal laws in the light of new devolution laws. He was head of the building committee for the New Khartoum international airport project 1981-83 and has been head of the Dar Fur regional university physical planning and architectural project since 1983. Among his recent publications are Human Settlements in Arab Countries Vol. I, 1980, Vol. II, 1986 and Arabic Version of Volume I, 1986, co-author with Adil M. Ahmad, Khartoum University Press; The Role of Intermediate and Small Centres in the Development of Gezira, Sudan (co-editor with Ian Haywood and author of five chapters), IIED/SGAHS, London/ Khartoum, 1986; and Popular Settlements in Khartoum (co-author with Adil M. Ahmad, Ian Haywood and Osman El Kheir), SGAHS, Khartoum, 1985.
Salih A. El Arifi is at the Department of Geography, University of Khartoum and a member of the Sudanese Group for Assessment of Human Settlements. His recent publications include 'Demographic and Spatial Growth Patterns of Gezira in The Role of Intermediate and Small Centres in the Development of Gezira, Sudan, op. cit. and 'Nature and Rate of Urbanization in the Sudan' in Urbanization and Urban Life in the Sudan, Valdo Pons (ed.), University of Khartoum and Hull, 1980.
Ali Mohamed El Hassan is at the Department of Economics, Gezira Univesity, Sudan, and a member of the Sudanese Group for Assessment of Human Settlements. His recent publications include 'Production Relations in the Gezira Scheme', in The Role of Intermediate and Small Centres in the Development of Gezira, Sudan, op. cit.
Mohamed Osman El Sammani is a lecturer at the University of Khartoum and, since 1982, has been a member of the Sudanese Group for Assessment of Human Settlements. Recent publications include, 'Gaps in the Water Provision Map of the Sudan', Sudan Notes and Records , Vol. LIX, No. 59; 'The Impact of Water Sources on Eco-systems', Sudan Notes and Records, Vol. LIX, No. 61; and 'Some Environmental Developments and Related Implications in Gezira', of The Role of Intermediate and Small Centres in the Development of Gezira, Sudan, op. cit.
Jorge E. Hardoy is Director of the Human Settlements Programme. International Institute for Environment and Development and Senior Fellow, Centra de Estudios Urbanos y Regionales (Buenos Aires), At present, he is also President of the National Commission for Historical Monuments of Argentina and a member of the advisory board of the Argentinian National Research Council (CONICET). Qualifying as an architect from Buenos Aires University, with a masters degree in City and Regional Planning and a doctorate from Harvard University, he is a former Senior Research Fellow of the International Development Research Centre of Canada. He is also a former President of the Inter-American Planning Society and has twice been a Guggenheim Fellow. Recent books include El Impacto de la urbanizacion en los centros historicos de America Latina (co-authored with Mario R. dos Santos), published by UNESCO/UNDP in Lima, 1983; Shelter: Need and Response (co-authored with David Satterthwaite), published by John Wiley and Sons, 1981; Politicas Agarias y politicas urbanas en America Latina, IDRC, Bogota, 1981; and Shelter Provision in Developing Countries (with A.L. Mabogunje and R.P. Misra), John Wiley and Sons, 1978. He is also author of two books and many articles on urbanization in Precolumbian cities and editor of a series of volumes on Latin American urban history.
