The Other Taiwan
Political and Economic Development/Asia
Taiwan's dramatic postwar transformation from bomb-damaged former Japanese colony, pacified Chinese province, and Guomindang bastion to economic miracle and showplace of state-sponsored democratic transformation has been the subject of intense scholarly and popular scrutiny. Few studies, however, have confronted the other, darker side of the island's economic revolution. The contributors to this important new text address that imbalance by examining the effects of the socio-economic transformation of Taiwan's political system, environment, religious structures, the relationships between the sexes and the different ethnic populations. They also examine the way in which different segments of the economy have reacted to the government's attempts to maintain certain traditional sectors and to control basic interpersonal and intergroup relationships within the economic sphere.
What emerges from this important text is a decidedly revisionist portrait of a country that is far more complex than the one depicted in much of the existing "Taiwan miracle" literature.
In addition to his substantive introduction. Professor Rubinstein provides background and context for each of the major sections, making this new text user-friendly for a wide variety of courses.
