Military Legacies
Landmines, cluster bombs, chemical pollutants, and other remnants of war continue to cause death to humans and damage to the environment long after the guns have fallen silent. From the jungles of Vietnam to the arctic tundra of Russia, no region has escaped the legacy of warfare.
To understand the legacy of modern militarism, this book presents an overview of post-conflict societies, with an emphasis on the human toll exacted by modern warfare.
James A. Tyner (Ph.D., University of Southern California) is Professor of Geography at Kent State University. His research interests include population geography, political geography, and Southeast Asia. Global Realities:A Routledge Series
Edited by Charles C. Lemert, Wesleyan University
The Series Global Realities offers concise accounts of how the nations and regions of the world are experiencing the effects of globalization. Richly descriptive yet theoretically informed, each volume shows how individual places are navigating the tension between age-old traditions and the new forces generated by globalization.

As a geographer, I am particularly interested in landscapes. Whether the deep green rice fields of central Cambodia or the serrated mountain ridges of northern Laos, I admire and respect the diverse environments of our world. As a global citizen, though, I am frustrated by the continued militarism and acquiescence of warfare that threatens these environments. I am frustrated also by the ignorance and naivety of a society that too often sees war not only as natural and normal, but also as a self-contained event. But war has no end-points. The First World War neither began on July 28, 1914, nor did it end on November 11, 1918. And the same holds true for all other wars. The causes are multiple and are found in the days (if not years) leading up to the time when actual fighting begins. And wars do not end when the fighting ceases. In Military Legacies I hope to provide some understanding of the consequences of war, and the deadly legacies that continue well into the future.
Writers, even academic ones, are not confined to ivory towers. Rather, they read and talk and interact with innumerable other people who in various ways contribute to the final manuscript. Their influence may be direct or indirect, but it is ever-present. And both tradition and appreciation require an acknowledgment of that influence. At Routledge, thanks are extended to my editor, Stephen Rutter. Apart from being an outstanding editor, he is a great guy; I am fortunate to have worked with him on this, our second book. Thanks also are extended to Leah Babb-Rosenfeld, who skillfully guided my book through the production process.
There are numerous people who through personal conversation and their writings have challenged me to think critically on the intersection of population, politics, and war. These include Carl Dahlman, Michael Dear, Colin Flint, Derek Gregory, Curt Roseman, Gerard Toal, Shannon OLear, and Steve Oluic.
Many thanks are extended to former and current graduate students, including Steve Butcher, Sutapa Chaddopaya, Donna Houston, Josh Inwood, Rob Kr use, Olaf Kuhlke, Steve Oluic (again), Gabe Popescue, David Stasiuk, Rob Schwartz, Andrew Shears, and Stacey Wicker. Special mention must be made of Dave and Andy, for their thoughtful comments, critiques, and suggestions on earlier drafts of this book. Special thanks are also extended to Gabe and the two Steves for our lengthy discussions on all things political.
