Economic Development in Chinas Northwest
Under the ethnic affairs management regime established by the Peoples Republic of China, every Chinese citizen is classified within one of 56 state-recognised nationalities. Government policy assumes that these nationalities differ from one another primarily in their levels of economic development, and asserts that ethnic divisions and identities fade with the gradual achievement of economic and social equality. As a result, economic development policy in minority nationality areas has often constituted a replica of the model which has already proven successful in Chinas Han Chinese dominated east.
Research conducted across five locations in Chinas Northwest paints a far more complex picture, however. This book considers for the first time how identity informs the nature of economic participation among ethnic minority entrepreneurs in Chinas remote Northwest. Through interviews with entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds, including Tibetan, Han and Muslim Chinese, this book highlights how ethnic and other identities inform the nature of economic participation. Furthermore, it explores the broader implications of this de facto economic segregation for Chinas ongoing social harmony and political stability. Ultimately, this book demonstrates how economic participation, even when successful in achieving its economic outcomes, may actually serve to reinforce and strengthen minority national identity perhaps even at the expense of national Chinese identity.
This book will be useful for students and scholars of Chinese Studies, Ethnic Studies and Economics.

Guide
It is with no small tinge of regret that I now submit this book and the body of research it represents. Although there is of course some relief in its completion, its submission also represents the conclusion of an enjoyable and rewarding period of my life. Weeks, months and years were spent delving deep into the topics I love: ethnicity, nationalism, history and equity. I have been lucky to have support from many people over this time, and it is only right that I take this opportunity to thank them.
First, my supervisory team Professor David Goodman and Dr Minglu Chen. Without Professor Goodman, I would never have even made my first trip to China back in 2001. It was his suggestion that I spend my first year after graduation in the coal-choked sprawl of Shanxi Provinces Taiyuan. It must have been a good idea because now, over 15 years later, my life is still strongly connected to China. I thank Professor Goodman for his advice, guidance and support over the course of my research. The other member of my supervisory team, Dr Minglu Chen, has also played a critical role. From the very beginning of my research she has been a bedrock of support, guiding me through the ever-complicated web of academic bureaucracy and keeping me focused on the end goal. I couldnt have asked for a better supervisor and friend. Special mention also goes to Professor Li Huai from North West Normal University. His help while I undertook my fieldwork was invaluable, and I thank him for the time and effort he took to help me during my stay in Lanzhou. I also acknowledge and appreciate the funding support received from The University of Sydney, including funds provided by the Postgraduate Research Support Scheme and the China Studies Centre.
I was lucky to be aided in my fieldwork by a number of excellent research assistants. Their knowledge and skills were invaluable in helping me better understand the lives of Chinas minority nationalities. I thank them each for their contribution to my research: Lu Mingzhang, La Weizhen, Rinchen Tso and Pagbatso.
There are also many others I would like to thank who provided advice, friendship and support during my time in China including Danmaji Niu, Snow Li and Dr Xu Xiaoli. China would have been a far lonelier place without you all there. Similarly, while in Sydney I kept my focus and sanity through regular coffees with my fellow comrades Niki Talmacs and Zhang Kai. I also thank Alain Goumy for permission to use his images for the book.
