My original interest in the political economy of Nigeria developed when I taught at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. I owe a large debt to former colleagues and students at that institution. In Oxford, Tajuddeen Abdulraheem and Tony Akinola were always willing to share with me their vast knowledge of Nigerian politics. At the Queen Elizabeth House Library, Gill Short and Bob Townsend were a constant help. In London, Patrick Smith, Richard Synge, and Tony Berrett assisted me in various ways. Tajuddeen Abdulraheem, Yakubu Aliyu, Sara Berry, Tom Biersteker, Tabitha Kanogo, Mathew Lockwood, Otto Marenin, Susan Martin, Bayo Olukoshi, John Peel, Ken Swindell, Nick Van Hear, Gavin Williams, and Alhaji Mahmood Yakubu commented on various chapters. I thank them and take full responsibility for the final product.
