Have I forgotten
The dead young men whose flesh will not reflower
But in this single bloom which now I pluck,
Weaving it into my spirit as victors weave
A chaplet, gathered from mould, for honor's sake?
This is my body, woven from dead and living,
Given over again to the quick lustration
Of a new moment: This is my body and spirit,
Broken but never tamed, risen from the bloody sod,
Walking suddenly alive in a new morning.
Donald Davidson, "The Sod of Battlefields"

Preface
The quest to discern meaning in history has been characteristic of Western thought for more than five hundred years. This enterprise carries two inherent dangers: first, that human beings will attribute ultimate purpose to historically provisional ambitions and values; and second, that they will confuse the historical with the divine and seek to abolish time, to repeal contingency, and at last to establish the kingdom of heaven on earth. In their efforts to reclaim southern history and to revitalize the southern tradition, the Southern Agrarians of the 1920s and 1930s had constantly to restrain themselves from making the City of God out of a City of Man. They were not entirely successful.
