Constitutional Democracy
Westview Replica Editions
The concept of Westview Replica Editions is a response to the continuing crisis in academic and informational publishing. Library budgets for books have been severely curtailed. Ever larger portions of general library budgets are being diverted from the purchase of books and used for data banks, computers, micromedia, and other methods of information retrieval. Interlibrary loan structures further reduce the edition sizes required to satisfy the needs of the scholarly community. Economic pressures on the university presses and the few-private scholarly publishing companies have severely limited the capacity of the industry to properly serve the academic and research communities. As a result, many manuscripts dealing with important subjects, often representing the highest level of scholarship, are no longer economically viable publishing projectsor, if accepted for publication, are typically subjected to lead times ranging from one to three years.
Westview Replica Editions are our practical solution to the problem. We accept a manuscript in camera-ready form, typed according to our specifications, and move it immediately into the production process. As always, the selection criteria include the importance of the subject, the work's contribution to scholarship, and its insight, originality of thought and excellence of exposition. The responsibility for editing and proofreading lies with the author or sponsoring institution. We prepare chapter headings and display pages, file for copyright, and obtain Library of Congress Cataloging in Publication Data. A detailed manual contains simple instructions for preparing the final typescript, and our editorial staff is always available to answer questions.
The end result is a book printed on acid-tree paper and bound in sturdy library-quality soft covers. We manufacture these books ourselves using equipment that does not require a lengthy make-ready process and that allows us to publish first editions of 300 to 600 copies and to reprint even smaller quantities as needed. Thus, we can produce Replica Editions quickly and can keep even very specialized books in print as long as there is a demand for them.
About the Book and Editor
Constitutional Democracy: Essays in Comparative Politics edited by Fred Eidlin
A frequent criticism of contemporary political science is that empirical research too seldom is combined with in-depth inquiry into the philosophical, historical, and legal foundations of the societies it seeks to understand. Others suggest that political scientists specializing in U.S. government too rarely collaborate with those who study other countries.
The contributions in this volume belie these claims. The authors, all colleagues, students, and friends of Henry W. Ehrmann, represent the U.S., France, Germany, and Canada, the four countries in which Dr. Ehrmann has lived. The essays reflect the breadth and scope of Ehrmann's work as a teacher, scholar, and political activist. The contributions to this volume cover a broad range of topics, among them political theory and methodology of comparative politics and the interrelationships of economic, social, historical, and political developments, and include theoretically oriented studies of such problems as interest group politics, political culture, and parties. Integrating constitutional law and political philosophy with comparative sociological and historical research and theory, Henry Ehrmann's approach to teaching and research sets an excellent example for the contemporary study of political science.
Dr. Eidlin, associate professor of political studies at the University of Guelph, is the author of The Logic of "Normalization": The Soviet Intervention in Czechoslovakia of 21 August 1968 and the Czechoslovak Response.

Guide
A disturbing feature of much contemporary political science is the chasm separating empirical research from inquiry into the philosophical, historical, and legal foundations of the societies it seeks to understand. It is also too seldom that political scientists specializing in U.S. government and politics are engaged in dialogue with those who study other countries.
The contributors to this volume-many of them scholars of international repute-are colleagues, students, and friends of Henry W. Ehrmann from the United States, France, Germany, and Canada-the four countries in which Ehrmann has lived and worked as a teacher, scholar, and political activist. Integrating comparative constitutional law and political philosophy with comparative sociological and historical research and theory, Ehrmann's approach to teaching and research sets an excellent example for contemporary political science. The essays in this volume reflect the breadth and scope of Ehrmann's own work, as well as its unifying themes. They range from political theory, constitutional law and theory and methodology of comparative politics, through theoretically-oriented studies dealing with such problems as interest group politics, political culture, voting behavior, political parties and representation, and the interrelationships of economic, social, historical, and political developments.
Henry Ehrmann belongs to a generation of social scientists whose work was strongly influenced by the collapse of German democracy, the end of the constitutional order, and the rise of the National Socialist regime. He experienced the cultural splendor and political desperation of the Weimar Republic. He was born in Berlin in 1908, attended the French Gymnasium there, and subsequently studied law in Berlin and Freiburg. His doctoral thesis was outside the mainstream of legal studies. It dealt with the relations between the partners and adversaries in collective bargaining, and was based partly on data gathered from trade union files. Upon completion of his studies Ehrmann began training as a law clerk in Berlin. He was dismissed from the administration of justice after Hitler's accession to power in 1933 because of illegal political activity and subsequently arrested by the Gestapo, tortured, and sent to the concentration camp at Oranienburg.
He escaped to France in 1934 and, until 1940, worked as a freelance journalist in Paris. During this period he was active in the anti-Nazi resistance in France, and was also a research associate of the International Institute for Social History and the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research, which had been taken under the wing of Colombia University.
