Stefanie M. Herrmann is a researcher in Arid Lands Resource Sciences at the University of Arizona.

Charles F. Hutchinson is director of the Office of Arid Lands Studies at the University of Arizona.

Pierre Marc Johnson is senior counsel with Heenan Blaikie and advisor to the Commission for Environmental Cooperation and the secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

Friederike Knabe is an independent consultant, working primarily with nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) on international environmental and development policies and strategies.

Michelle Leighton is assistant dean at John F. Kennedy University Law School.

Masse Lo is the Regional Director of ENDA LEAD Francophone Africa, a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to create, strengthen, and support networks of people and institutions promoting change toward sustainable development.

Karel Mayrand is director of research at Unisfra International Centre, an independent, not-for-profit research centre on sustainable development policy and law, and a lecturer in environment and international development issues at lUniversit de Sherbrooke.

Adil Najam is associate professor of international negotiation and diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

Noel Oettl is rural programme manager for the Environmental Monitoring Group (EMG) and is based in Nieuwoudtville, South Africa.

Marc Paquin is a lawyer specialising in international and comparative environmental and sustainable development law and policy, and co-founder and executive director of Unisfra International Centre, an independent not-for-profit research centre on sustainable development policy and law.

Richard Pearce is in charge of the desertification programme in the Bureau Regional pour lAfrique de lOuest (BRAO) of the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

Lene Poulsen is an independent consultant in sustainable development processes with a focus on good governance and sustainable livelihood in rural areas.

Susan Tressler is a consultant specialising in project development and fundraising.

Sally-Anne Way is Senior Advisor to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food and heads the Research Unit on the Right to Food, based at the Graduate Institute of Development Studies of the University of Geneva.

This publication is the result of the combined work of experts and highly esteemed development practitioners with long-standing experience on desertification and drought-related matters. Some of the authors have, over the years, played a key role in the negotiation sessions of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
