This book is based on my readings and observations of sub-Saharan Africas - photo 1
This book is based on my readings and observations of sub-Saharan Africas international relations over the last 15 years or so. Conducting research in and/or visiting over 30 African countries has also helped. Teaching African politics and international relations to African students at African universities has been an undoubted privilege and I have been fortunate enough to have taught at Dalhousie University (Canada), Mbarara University of Science and Technology (Uganda), Renmin University of China (China), the University of Botswana, the University of Hong Kong, the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa) and the University of St. Andrews (Scotland). I thank my students at all these places for their feedback and insights on many of the topics covered in this book. Equally, discussing ideas and thoughts with colleagues at the institutions where I have taught and at numerous academic conferences in Africa and elsewhere has been highly educational.
I would like to thank, in particular, two people who have always been willing to share their thoughts and provide advice: Fredrik Sderbaum of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and Paul D. Williams of George Washington University. Both have really helped me over the years, and I am lucky to count them as both collaborators and friends.
This book was written while a visiting professor at Renmin University of China, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Gothenburg and the University of Stellenbosch. I am really grateful to my hosts for facilitating excellent writing conditions.
I would also like to express my gratitude to the following for their various insights which have helped sharpen my thoughts: Daniel Bach, Morten Bs, William Brown, Fantu Cheru, Christopher Clapham, Scarlett Cornelissen, Kevin Dunn, Kenneth Good, Anthony Leysens, Pamela Mbabazi, Gladys Mokhawa, Mpho Molomo, Xenia Ngwenya, Francis Nyamnjoh, Cyril Obi, Adebayo Olukoshi and Tim Shaw.
Finally, I would especially like to thank my wife, Joanne, and my two children, Blythe and Archie, for their love and inspiration and for accompanying me on numerous travels around Africa. This book is dedicated to them.
