On East Asian Regional Cooperation I
The book intends to locate the process and effectiveness of cooperation in East Asia, to regard the construction of the East Asian community as the ideal, to see the contradictions and difficulties in construction as the reality, and to identify the actual development and achievement as the choice and effort between the two.
The year of 1997 saw the Asian financial crisis, which turned out to be a disaster but also opened up an opportunity for East Asia to establish cooperation mechanisms. Starting with the crisis, this book examines the origin and development of the East Asian cooperation movement. More importantly, it investigates the obstacles and resistance, and provides insights into the cooperation within East Asia in the context of unstable political environments. Specifically, it expounds the East Asian Free Trade Area, monetary cooperation, as well as the cooperation within Northeast Asian and Asia-Pacific regions.
Zhang Yunling , professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, specializes in the studies of international economics and international relations.

In my initial academic research, my main interest was in the openness and the development of the world economy, with the internal motivation to explore the theoretical foundation for the implementation of Chinas opening development policy. In 1985, I went to the United States to study and to do research, spending all my time in this field. In the late 1980s, I wrote a monograph of more than 400,000 words The Interdependence in World Economy , published by the Economic Science Press, which was reprinted by China Social Sciences Press in 2012 without any modification. It was listed in the Composition Library of Contemporary Chinese Scholars .
After I came to work at the Institute of European Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (then called the Western Europe Research Institute), it was impossible for me to continue to focus on doing research in this field; therefore, I adjusted my direction of research by focusing on the study of the European Union, i.e., changing my attention from the world to the region.
At the beginning of the 1990s, I was transferred to the Asia-Pacific Research Institute and I had to readjust my focus of study, mainly concerned with the research on the issues of the Asia-Pacific region. Based on my research on the European Union, I shifted my main direction of research to the promotion of Asia-Pacific cooperation. The salient features of the Asia-Pacific region are wide geographical areas and great differences, which means that the study of the region requires the researcher to both become familiar with all the countries and have a comprehensive perspective. In particular, the study of regional cooperation requires the analysis of not only economic issues but also politics and international relations. China is located in the Asia-Pacific; its main trade markets and overseas investments come from the Asia-Pacific region. As a scholar, I had the opportunity to participate in policy research and related communication and discussions from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to the regional cooperation in East Asia.
I have built the first APEC Policy Research Center in China, providing a large number of research results for the Chinese government. In the process of regional cooperation in East Asia, I have participated in many organizations, such as the East Asia Vision Group (EAVG), the China-ASEAN FTA Joint Expert Group, the Joint Research Group of Experts for the Feasibility of East Asia Free Trade Area (EAFTA, ASEAN + 3), and the Joint Research Group of Experts for the Feasibility of Close Economic Partnership for East Asia (CEPEA, 10 + 6). I have also taken part in a number of working groups and official and academic meetings.
