Hooked: Drug War Films in Britain, Canada, and the U. S.: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Hooked: Drug War Films in Britain, Canada, and the U. S." wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Drug prohibition emerged at the same time as the discovery of film, and their histories intersect in interesting ways. This book examines the ideological assumptions embedded in the narrative and imagery of one hundred fictional drug films produced in Britain, Canada, and the U.S. from 1912 to 2006, including Broken Blossoms, Reefer Madness, The Trip, Superfly, Withnail and I, Traffik, Traffic, Layer Cake, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Trailer Park Boys, and more. Boyd focuses on past and contemporary illegal drug discourse about users, traffickers, drug treatment, and the intersection of criminal justice with counterculture, alternative, and stoner flicks. She provides a socio-historical and cultural criminological perspective, and an analysis of race, class and gender representations in illegal drug films.

This illuminating work will be an essential text for a wide range of students and scholars in the fields of criminology, sociology, media, gender and womens studies, drug studies, and cultural studies.

Acknowledgments
I would like to thank Benjamin Holtzman and Gerhard Boomgaarden of Routledge for their interest and support in the publication of this book and Carey Nershi for her composition of the manuscript and James Barbee for his copyediting. I am indebted to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada; without their support, this project might not have been completed. I am also indebted to my colleagues at Studies in Policy in Practice, University of Victoria.
I am grateful to Craig Reinarman and Dennis Sullivan for agreeing to review my book proposal and the first chapter and providing feedback to me. I would also like to thank Karlene Faith for reading the first draft. Her critical insight and helpful comments contributed to this book. Similarly, Dara Culhane and Sunera Thobani were essential supports in writing this book. They painstakingly read over my draft proposal and introduction and provided support over the three years that I was researching and writing the book. Their friendship, scholarship, and activism have helped to shape my own work, although any errors or mistakes are completely of my own making.
I would also like to thank Nedjo Rogers for his editorial help on my original research proposal for this research and Starla Anderson for her insightful comments on my book proposal. I am grateful to Mark Stoddart, who worked as a research assistant on the project for almost two years. His contributions were invaluable and his enthusiasm for the project helped carry it forward. Research assistants Catherine Van Mossell and Connie Carter also contributed to this book, and their input was significant. I am indebted to Connie for her thoughtful editorial comments and her help with formatting and securing copyright permission for the photos in the book, a task that seemed insurmountable at times. I would also like to thank Barbara Hodgson and Mark Starks for their insights about copyrights and film stills. A special thanks to Gloria Watkins for helping me with the title of the book.
Finally, I would like to thank Val Zwicker, Marjorie van Orden, Cheryl Anderson, Carolyn Crichton, Morgan LeBlond, Don Forsyth, Nuszia Mordasiewicz, Gazella Mordasiewicz, Dawne Graham, Jeannie Kamins, Marilyn Green, and my family for all of their support. My son Iain suffered through three years of film viewing and offered his technical help more times than I can say. My daughter Jade gratefully read my first draft and lent her support to the project. Her own research and writing on film introduced me to a new field of research and inquiry.
Some of the material in this book was previously published in two journal articles. I am grateful for their permission to reprint the material in this book:
