The Next Jihad draws from the on-the-ground experience and personal testimonials of two of the worlds leading advocates for religious freedom and human rightsone Jewish and one Christianas they explain whats happening to Christians across Africa, why it matters, and what must be done now.

Although news of Christians being killed overseas hits major media outlets from time to time, the news quickly fades away while our fellow believers continue to suffer. Johnnie Moore, as he has done before, wants to awaken the church and American politicians to the daily horrors happening to Christians, focusing this time on Africa.

While the world has been fixated on jihadist threats in the Middle East, terrorists from Nigeria to Kenya have had free reign to massacre on a scale far beyond that of the terrorists in Iraq and Syria. Whole villages have been razed, mothers and children have been grotesquely killed, and an unabashed effort at ethnic cleansing has been embarked upon with unrelenting resolve. Their intention is to rid Africa of its Christians, either by forced conversion to Islam or by destruction and murder.

PRAISE FOR The Next Jihad The Next Jihad is a vivid and timely primer on the - photo 1
PRAISE FOR The Next Jihad

The Next Jihad is a vivid and timely primer on the religious terror now targeting Christians in large regions of the African country of Nigeria. That, for its faith, this church communitythe largest Christian community of the most Christian continent todaysuffers relentless, unspeakable death and torment at the hands of those who align with Islamic State and other extremists should at once inspire us and serve as a warning. Yet Rev. Johnnie Moore and Rabbi Abraham Cooper show that the courageous witness of these African Christians is met by silence as their own government and the international community respond with cold indifference. Read this compelling book and learn why we should act while there is still time.

NINA SHEA, DIRECTOR, HUDSON INSTITUTES CENTER FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Rabbi Cooper and Johnnie Moore have written a compelling firsthand account of the unfolding tragedy in Nigeria, Africas most populous nation. They write with clarity, insight, and urgency about an unfolding genocide, driven by Jihadist ideology and hatred of difference.

They detail the hacking to death and beheading of Christians; the destruction of homes, livelihoods, and places of worship; and the abduction and rape of young womenpersonified by the story of Leah Sharibuand they ask, why are we so indifferent?

This book is a timely and overdue call to actionwith fifteen concluding recommendationsreminding us that quiet diplomacy didnt save six million Jews, that never again is a glib slogan that has been rendered meaningless in Jos, Kano, Plateau State, and Nigerias many other slaughterhouses.

This is a powerful message that demands the attention of us all, and it ought to be on every leaders desk. We have voices, votes, freedoms, privilegesand having read this book, you will have no excuse for not using them.

THE LORD ALTON OF LIVERPOOL

Rabbi Abraham Cooper and Rev. Johnnie Moore have long been numbered among the worlds foremost advocates for religious freedom and human rights. Im very glad they have turned their attention to Nigeria, where there is an ongoing genocide largely ignored by the world. They have led by example by traveling there themselves before writing this well-researched and compelling call to action. The world must act now.

CONTENTS

Guide

I n addition to writing about the atrocities committed by Boko Haram and Islamic State (IS) in West Africa, weve also written at length about the atrocities committed by Fulani militants.

In this book, therefore, you will find occasional references to Fulani militants. We have chosen this term over the more common Fulani tribesmen to distinguish between the actual militants and the scores of peace-loving Fulani tribespeople throughout Nigeria and the broader region. The tribespeople have nothing to do with the terrorism committed by some of their kinsmen and are often themselves victims of atrocities.

Also, it is not our intention to infer that people in the government in Nigeria who are Fulani Muslims themselves are necessarily affiliated, directly or indirectly, with the Fulani militants. Rather, we believe there are people of influence in the government who want to find a peaceful and prosperous future for all of the citizens of Nigeria, irrespective of their religion or ethnicity.

We anticipate being accused of politicizing religion by addressing its role in Nigerias conflict, but we believe that religion isnt just at the heart of the crisis in Nigeria but also may be the key to the solution.

Finally, we have, in certain circumstances, changed the names or identifying characteristics of victims to protect their privacy.

W ere guessing this may be the first time youve read a book coauthored by an evangelical pastor and an orthodox Jewish rabbi.

Dont worry. Youre not the only one.

There arent very many books like this.

For centuries collaboration between Jewish and Christian clergy was challengingand sometimes impossible. The enmity between our separate branches of Abrahams tree has been real. The truth is that trust was the last word to come to mind when reflecting on nearly two millennia of Christendoms theological and practical maltreatment of Jews. Christians, including over 75 percent of Hitlers Nazis, were often enablers or practitioners of the worlds worst anti-Semitism. Jews have often struggled to trust the motives of Christian friendship when Christianity is so fixated on conversion.

As Rabbi Jonathan Sacks has reminded us, None of the great religions can say, in unflinching self-knowledge: Our hands never shed innocent blood.

Yet the complexity of our history makes the unique friendship now shared between evangelicals and Jews among the great miracles of our modern era. In a world where anti-Semitism remains persistent and inundates governments, traditional media, the internet, and international organizations, it is often the millions of Christian friends of the Jewish people who multiply the voices of the worlds sixteen million Jews and the State of Israel. Evangelical Christians, by the sheer size of their movement (now exceeding seven hundred million), may now stand as the worlds primary bulwark against anti-Zionism, the current, most potent mutation of historical anti-Semitism.
