INTRODUCTION
M ost stories about great leaders focus on the remarkable impact they had on the world. Sojourner Truth escaped from slavery to become one of the most influential speakers on civil rights and abolition. Abraham Lincoln courageously took a stand against slavery and steered the United States through the trauma of the Civil War, ultimately ending slavery and forcing the country to stand on the right side of history. Barack Obama became the first black president of the United States after serving as an Illinois state senator and working as a grassroots community organizer in Chicago. But what is often left out of these remarkable stories is how these great women and men developed the key skills they needed to become inspiring leaders and make a change.
The truth is that leaders are made, not born. Everyone is born with the capacity to become a great leader, but not everyone gets the opportunity to develop his or her natural-born talents. This is especially true for those who have limited access to political education and economic resources. Although there are millions of young people in America, the voices of youth are among the most excluded in politics. Young people often struggle to gain the respect of older politicians, who may view them as uninformed and lacking necessary leadership skills. As a result, they are left out of political conversations and not allowed to take part in decision making, even when they will be directly affected by the outcomes.
Sojourner Truth was born into slavery and escaped to become a prominent activist in the civil rights movement. She was a skilled and inspiring leader.
Young people who are interested in making their voices heard in the political arena can take a stand to change this situation. By understanding what it means to be a political leader, developing leadership skills, and becoming more aware of political issues, young people can break down the barriers to their political involvement and demand to be heard. Whether it be by running for student council to ensure schools hear and respond to the needs of their student body, starting a campaign to raise awareness about a particular issue, or working toward a bigger goal, such as running for office or even becoming the president of the United States, there are many ways that savvy aspiring leaders can sharpen their skills, participate in the political process, and have a real impact in their own communities and beyond. As Harriet Tubman once said, Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A POLITICAL LEADER?
T here are many different kinds of political leaders and many different ways a person can become one. Some people become political leaders by running for office in the local, state, or federal government. Others are thrust into the role after taking a stand for something that they believe in. The two most common types of political leaders are elected officials and political activists. Each has unique roles and expectations, but they ultimately share an important duty: to advocate for and protect the populations they represent.
There are many ways to serve as a leader. One of those ways is to be elected to your local school board.
WHAT ARE ELECTED OFFICIALS?
An elected official, or politician, is a person who is elected to political office. There are many kinds of elected officials who serve the public with varying degrees of power and influence. Local elected officials operate within a small jurisdiction (a school, city, town, or neighborhood) and represent the people in their immediate community. For example, residents in school districts typically elect their school board members, who are responsible for implementing local school policies and budgeting, overseeing the employment of superintendents, and ensuring school facilities are properly cared for. Other examples of local politicians include city council members, county commissioners, and mayors. These local elected officials have similar roles and responsibilities. They represent their constituencies, enact legislation and policy, and oversee budgeting. The main difference between these positions is their sphere of influence. School board members are appointed to manage local schools, while the mayor of a town presides over all other members of the local government to make sure an entire town or city is run with the needs of its community in mind.
When it comes to national politics, the first position that most people think of is usually the president, and with good reason. The president holds the highest level of political office and is responsible for running the entire country. However, contrary to popular belief, the president doesnt have limitless power. Congress, comprised of senators and members of the House of Representatives, is made up of hundreds of political leaders who are responsible for everything from voting to pass legislation to even potentially impeaching the president if necessary. There are many different kinds of political leaders, all with distinct and important roles.
Members are sworn in to the House of Representatives 116th Congress on Capitol Hill on January 3, 2019, in Washington, DC.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RUNNING FOR OFFICE
Running for office in a local, state, or federal election comes with many responsibilities. Upon announcing candidacy, political candidates lives become about their constituent basewhom they will represent if they win the election. That may be just a few hundred or thousand people, for example, if they are running for a position on a school board or city council. In a large state or US congressional district, a political leader will represent thousands or even millions of people. As international leaders, presidents represent not only their country, but should also serve the interests of the billions of people worldwide. There are many ways that candidates strive to demonstrate to the public that they have the skills, education, and ability to meet these expectations.
