FOREWORD
by Czeslaw Milosz
Let me begin by quoting the words of Mahatma Gandhi: "If a government does a grave injustice, the subject must withdraw cooperation wholly or partially, sufficient to wean the ruler from wickedness. In each case conceived by me there is an element of suffering whether mental or physical. Without such suffering it is not possible to attain freedom."
