About the Author
Jamie Hardingreceived his PhD from the Department of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He has been employed at Northumbria University since 1995, first as a lecturer in Housing Studies and more recently as a senior lecturer in Research Methods in the Department of Social Sciences. Before moving into higher education he worked for a number of social housing organisations.
Jamies main area of interest is qualitative and quantitative research methods, which he teaches at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. Working with colleagues, he has developed a programme for staff of local authorities and voluntary organisations which develops the research skills that are needed in the workplace. He also lectures on criminal justice an area where he has edited a textbook and homelessness, a subject on which he has written several journal articles. Higher education is another topic on which he has published; his publications report on quantitative and qualitative data analysed by a range of methods.
Jamie is married with two adult children and two grandchildren. He enjoys running marathons and ultramarathons, watching Northern League football and walking Lucy, his gorgeous but constantly hungry Labrador.
Acknowledgements
A great thank-you to all my colleagues, both at my own university and elsewhere, who kindly gave up their time to provide data for this project and who appear under pseudonyms, and also to those who have provided helpful advice: Matt Baillie Smith, Pam Davies, Karen Williamson and Carol Stephenson. I am particularly grateful to Mary Laing for all her support in the writing of this second edition, both in providing examples from her projects and through our conversations at textbook club.
I very much appreciate the help of the young man in the temporary accommodation project and the food bank volunteer who both agreed to be quoted at length. Another big thank-you to Misha Kennedy for the role that she played. Across the two editions, I have been very grateful for the excellent and timely advice of all the staff at Sage who at I have worked with: Patrick Brindle, Katie Melzer, Anna Horvai, David Hodge, Mila Steele, Jai Seaman and John Nightingale.
Finally, I am indebted to Allison for her constant support and love, and to Callan and Corryn for providing me with the incentive to finish the book in time to escape from the monsters in the garden.

Qualitative data analysis: Help is at hand
Are you concerned about analysing qualitative data? Have you collected some qualitative data, or are you in the process of collecting it, but worrying about making sense of it and drawing findings from it? Then this book is written for you, based on my own research experience and many years of working with students, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, who have wanted guidance as to how to analyse qualitative data. It is written particularly for undergraduate students who are undertaking their first piece of qualitative research. However, others in different circumstances have also found the explanations and exercises in the book helpful from PhD students to people tasked with analysing some qualitative data as part of their job.
The two most common forms of qualitative data collection are interviews where the researcher discusses a topic or series of topics with each respondent individually and focus groups, where a number of respondents discuss the topic(s) with each other, with the researcher facilitating and steering the discussion. It is very common for students who have transcribed and read through their interview or focus group data to feel daunted by the task of trying to make sense of the material. This book will show you how to go from that state of confusion to the immensely satisfying point of being able to identify your findings, to check their validity and to write about them. While acknowledging that there are no correct answers, I will make suggestions as to how the analysis can be undertaken, using real data to provide examples and exercises.
It often seems that quantitative data can be analysed in a more straightforward way than qualitative data, producing outputs that are easier to grasp such as percentages, charts and graphs. This leads some people to think that quantitative data can reveal more about the social world. However, while quantitative data is undoubtedly helpful in informing us about the big picture, qualitative data can provide more detail, revealing the complexity of human experience and motivation, and enabling us to identify similarities and differences in the perspectives of individuals. It can also facilitate the building of
