About the author
Jamie Harding received his PhD from the Department of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He has been employed at Northumbria University since 1995, first as a Lecturer in Housing Studies and more recently as a Senior Lecturer in Research Methods in the Department of Social Sciences. Before moving into higher education he worked for a number of social housing organisations.
Jamies main area of teaching is qualitative and quantitative research methods, which he teaches at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. He also lectures on criminal justice and is a Director of the Centre for Offenders and Offending. A key area of interest is homelessness, a subject on which he has published a book and several journal articles and also teaches a specialist module. He and his colleagues work in partnership with the local authority and voluntary organisations dealing with homelessness to undertake research, develop policy and provide student placements. Jamie has also published journal articles about higher education; his publications report on qualitative and quantitative data analysed by a range of methods.
Jamie is married with two adult children and a grandson; he is an enthusiastic but slow marathon runner.
Acknowledgements
Thank you to all the anonymous interviewees who generously gave up their time to support this project and for others at the case study university who made me feel so welcome.
I am very grateful to the young man in the temporary accommodation project who agreed to be quoted at length and to Misha Kennedy for the role that she played.
Thanks are also due to the focus group members, who provided such a lively discussion with so many examples to draw on.
Thank you to all my colleagues at Northumbria University who have offered valuable support and advice, particularly Matt Baillie Smith, Pam Davies, Karen Williamson and Carol Stephenson.
I am also grateful to all the staff at Sage who have advised me so well: Patrick Brindle, Katie Metzler, Anna Horvai and David Hodge.
Introduction
Chapter outline
This book was written largely because I have worked with many students, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, who have wanted guidance as to how to analyse qualitative data. Being confronted with a set of transcripts from interviews, or the record of one or more focus groups, can create great uncertainty as to what to do next. While acknowledging that there are no correct answers, this book will make suggestions as to how the analysis can be undertaken, using real data to provide examples and exercises.
Structure of the book
Data analysis is never the first task of any research project, so discusses briefly many of the factors and decisions that affect the earlier stages of the research process. The researcher must decide, for example, whether to use a primarily inductive or a primarily deductive approach, how to collect data and how to ensure that the research is conducted in an ethical manner.
