Preface
Before the publication of this book the shocking news of Isaac Sindiga's sudden death in May 1999 reached us at the African Studies Centre. He stayed at the Centre as a visiting fellow during the first half of 1997. At his arrival he was the Head of the Department of Tourism at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya. When he left, he had meanwhile been promoted to the function of Principal at Kisii Campus, Egerton University. During his stay at the Centre, we had learned to know him as a very friendly person, as a real gentleman, as a man of great wisdom and a broad interest, and last but not least as a devoted and very productive scholar.
As far as the latter is concerned, the main activity during his stay concerned the writing of the first draft of this book. The book analyses the contribution of tourism to African development, using Kenya as a country case. It weaves together ideas gleaned from a myriad of documentary sources. The study also forms a synthesis of African field experience, personal observations and many years' participation in tourism research and education. Isaac Sindiga also gave two seminars at the Centre. At the first, the framework for his study on tourism and African development was discussed. The second was entitled The Maasai Enigma and the Construction of Tourist Images. Finally, during the last month of his stay, he wrote the chapter on Tourism for the Kenya Coast Handbook.
It is tragic and hard to grasp that he has never seen the main product of his work in Leiden.
Dick Foeken, July 1999
