Pamela Allen lectures in Indonesian language and literature at the University of Tasmania. She has a BA (Asian Studies) from ANU, teaching qualifications from the University of Adelaide, an MA Irom the University of Hawaii and her PhD, 'Reading matters: An examination of plurality of meaning in selected Indonesian fiction 19801995' was taken through the University of Sydney. Her research interests include contemporary Indonesian literature, with a particular focus on postcoloniality, gender and identity. She is currently researching minority Chinese voices in Indonesian literature.
Tim Beal is a senior lecturer in the School of Marketing and International Business, Victoria University of Wellington. He is Chairman and Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Research Institute of New Zealand (APRI). Among his research interests are the political economy of North Korea, New Zealand's relationship with Asia, Asian migration and tourism and globalization. His recent books include Astronauts from Taiwan: Taiwanese immigration to Australia and New Zealand [with Farib Sos] (Wellington: Steele Roberts, 1999).
Stacey Burlet is lecturer in Applied Social Sciences at the University of Bradford, UK. Her research interests include the sociology of gender in Britain and South Asia, nationalism in South Asia and the South Asian Diaspora. Recently she has authored Pariahs and Powerbrokers: Hindu nationalism, Localised Violence and the Construction of Hindu-Muslim Conflict in Contemporary India (Macmillan, 2001).
Bob Catley is Professor and Chair of Political Studies at the University of Otago. His most recent books are Global America; Imposing Liberalism on a Recalcitrant World, NY, 2000; and Waltzing with Matilda: Should New Zealand Join Australia?, Wellington, 2001. He works on the comparative and international politics of the Asia Pacific.
Shuyun Crossland-Guo is Assistant Professor of Chinese Literature and Language at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Recent publications include: 'Verse-Introductory Formulas in Bianwen: An Implication of Immediacy in Oral-derived Tradition Text,' in Conference Proceedings for The International Academic Conference on The Centenary of the Discovery of the Dunhuang Manuscript Library Cave No 17, Liaoning: Liaoning renmin chubanshe, 2001 and `The Returning of Dunhuang Manuscripts to China: Fact or Fiction?' in Li Weiguo, ed, Dialogue of the Century: On Dunhuang , Shanghai: Keji jiaoyu chubanshe, 2001. Present research interests are in oral theory and Chinese oral-derived texts; popularization of Buddhism; and Dunhuang cave arts.
Steven Drakeley is the Undergraduate Coordinator of Asian Studies at the University of Western Sydney where he teaches Southeast Asian history and politics. His specific area of interest is post-independence Indonesian political history. He is currently researching the political history of Indonesia during the 1960s and 70s with reference to the role of Islam-based political forces.
Stephen Epstein is a senior lecturer in Classics and on the Board of Asian Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, where he specializes in both ancient Greek fiction and contemporary Korean literature and society. His recent publications include articles on the representation of the Other in postwar Korean fiction, changing images of North Korea in the South, and Longus' Daphnis and Chloe, as well as translations of Korean and Indonesian short stories. Currently he is co producing a documentary on the emergence of punk rock in Seoul and researching North Korean fiction at the turn of the millennium.
Anne M. Henderson is a part-time research officer in the New Settlers Programme, a Massey University-based project on the resettlement of skilled migrants in New Zealand, and a full-time PhD student at the School of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work at Massey University. Presently, she is investigating the relationships between language policy, immigration policy and language needs for successful resettlement among recently arrived skilled immigrants from the People's Republic of China. She has published a number of articles and book chapters on these issues.
Ken Henshall is a graduate of SOAS, London University. Prior to taking up a position at Waikato University he taught at the Universities of California, Auckland, and Western Australia. He has published on a wide range of Japan-related topics, including books on language, literature, history, society, and the Pacific War. His favourite interests are history and literature, with a particular focus on values, ideology, and ethics. His latest books (all 1999) are A History of Japan: From Stone Age to Superpower (Macmillan/St. Martin's Press), Dimensions of Japanese Society: Gender, Margins, and Mainstream (also Macmillan/St Martins Press), and The Last War of Empires: Japan and the Pacific War (Bateman, with Laurie Barber).
Haixin Jiang is Lecturer in Chinese at Otago University and specializes in contemporary Chinese women's literature. Currently, she is doing research on motherhood in China.
