The first volume of John Curtins War was recognized as a landmark in Australian political biography (The Australian) and remarkable (AFR). That book ends with the fall of Singapore and a fundamental realignment of Australias place in the world: The Americans were coming. So were the Japanese. This second volume, Triumph and Decline, tells the full, fascinating story of the next four years, as Curtin leads Australia in meeting its enemy and its new friend, the latter personified by the charismatic, self-certain General Douglas MacArthur. As Churchill abandons Australia and pursues a Hitler first strategy, Curtin and MacArthur fight to ensure that the War in the Pacific is an American priority. As the critical battles of the Coral Sea and Midway decide Australias fate and Kakoda creates a new legend Curtins resolute calm and implacable determination lift him beyond party conflicts to become Australias leader. But the outward strength disguises deteriorating health, and increasing doubt about the American alliance. Curtin determined Australias future but what would it have been had he lived? Triumph and Decline completes Edwards masterpiece and cements John Curtins place as our greatest of Prime Ministers.

About the Book

Triumph and Decline is the second volume of John Edwards notable John Curtins War .

It begins where the first volume ended, with the fall of Singapore to the Japanese invader and Australias shocked realisation that it might well be next in Japans victorious sweep south. This volume tells the full, fascinating story of the next four years as Australian Prime Minister John Curtin leads Australia in dealing with both its enemy and its new friend, America personified by the charismatic, self-certain General Douglas MacArthur.

Under the threat of Japanese forces landing on Australian shores, Curtin deftly steered Australia through the perilous year of 1942 and the critical battles of Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, Kokoda and Buna that would finally arrest the advance of Japan. Winning an overwhelming victory in the 1943 election, Curtin was poised to complete the transformation of Australia he had begun two years earlier. But his health was failing and along with it his political imagination and ambition.

Dying shortly after the defeat of Germany and before the defeat of Japan, Curtin was lamented as the pivotal leader that guided the nation in the crucible of the Pacific War between the end of old Australia and the creation of the new.

Recognised as a landmark political biography ( The Australian ), Edwards account of a great Australian leader is completed with Triumph and Decline .

Thanks again to all those people and institutions I thanked in Volume I of this - photo 1

Thanks again to all those people and institutions I thanked in Volume I of this biography. Penguin Random Houses team was once again exemplary for Volume II. Hilary Reynolds superbly edited this volume, and Meaghan Amor carried it through from manuscript to production, suggesting many improvements along the way. I am very thankful indeed for the close scrutiny of Mark Evans who proofread the galleys. As he did for Volume I, John Nethercote performed an initial edit and made many valuable suggestions. Barry Howarth again compiled a thorough index. Deborah Hope carefully read the text and proposed amendments. Historians Dr Chris Cunneen and Dr Peter Edwards and political scientist Professor Murray Goot kindly drew my attention to important work in their areas of interest relevant to this volume, acknowledged in endnotes.
