The work discussed in this volume was initiated by Professor Howard Bowen-Jones, University of Durham. Shell International Petroleum Company generously funded the research surveys. Petroleum Development Oman equally generously sponsored and funded the Khabura Project to the end of 1985. They, with fuel contributions from Shell Markets (Oman), also gave the Project and its staff much appreciated friendly help and logistic support even beyond 1985.
Each phase of the work was approved by the Government of Oman. Relations with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries were always close, leading to full sponsorship and funding by the Ministry in the period 1986 to 1994. From 1982 to 1989 the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour sponsored the spinning and weaving projects. From these Ministries, and other branches of government, we gained many insights into the development process. Throughout the whole Project period advice and encouragement was also provided by the Diwans Adviser on the Environment, who originally helped establish the Project when working for PDO.
The author had the privilege of being centrally involved in the Project from 1973 to 1994. During that time, specialist contributions to the research and development activities were made by more than forty senior staff, whose thoughtful hard work and dedication is fully appreciated. Three of them, seconded to the Project under the APO Scheme of the UKs ODA (now DFID), importantly contributed to partial final evaluations of the Project. Another six people, not otherwise mentioned here because their work was only loosely related to the subject of this volume, made invaluable team contributions: Jo Butler (mother and child welfare), Robert Whitcombe (research into the Little Bee, at al-Khabura), Morgan Manley and Paul Boyles (honeybees, Rustaq), Jan Karpowitcz and Alan Berkeley (honeybees, Dhofar). To all these people, and their spouses and children, many thanks.
Throughout the whole period the field work was as much a pleasure as a task thanks to the unfailing courtesy, good humour and responsiveness of the very many people with whom we interacted each day in the area of al-Khabura and other parts of rural Oman.
