Acknowledgments
This One Thing would not have been possible without the contributions of many people. Benjamin Holtzman and Shahrough Akhavi at Routledge Press Middle East Series in Politics, History and Law encouraged my project and provided much appreciated guidance. Ben, in particular, was an invaluable resource to a publishing neophyte. Tom Keating, Saleem Qureshi, Earl Waugh, Engin Isin and Malinda Smith all applied their considerable critical acumens and gave generously of their time. Janine Brodie possesses a profound understanding of the world and was unstinting in her support of an unpopular argument. She has my deepest respect.
Friends, too, were instrumental in the completion of this project. At different times, but all with great generosity of spirit, Sandeep Dhir, Quintin McCrimmon, Stella Gaon, Tanya Casperson and Bill Prince served as much-needed and engaging interlocutors. Stephan Untergasser and Steve Simmons sustained our friendships when I had neither the time nor energy to do so. The friends I made during my first trip to occupied Palestine in 2000 advanced considerably my understanding of Palestine and showed me the true meaning of hospitality.
I am indebted to my parents, Lois and Joe McMahon, to whom this project is dedicated. From my father I get the determination, or stubbornness, that enabled me to persevere through the most difficult stages of this project and from my mother I get my love of writing, unmatched by any other creative exercise.
My best friend Sandra Rein (Rein) deserves singular acknowledgement and gratitude for her support and encouragement. It is with no hyperbole that I say that this One Thing would never have been had it not been for her. Rein constantly challenged, stimulated and supported me, both as a colleague and a friend. The strengths of my project are a credit to her analytical rigor and endless encouragement. Rein was always there, no matter the issue and particularly in the early hours of the morning. Never did I envision coming out of this process with a friend of such greatness of heart and mind.
Finally, Kristine Cormier has made the completion of this book a much less lonely endeavor. Her loving support truly knows no temporal or spatial bounds.
