Introduction
O
n August , 2019 , 16-year-old
Greta unberg stood on the deck of
a yacht . It sailed past the Statue of Liberty
in New York City . People on other boats
welcomed Greta . ey held signs with
messages about how to help the planet.
Large crowds stood on the dock .
People cheered , and Greta waved to
them . Reporters waited for her to make
a statement . Her message about climate
change
and protecting the planet was
clear . Lets not wait any longer . Lets do
i t n o w .
It had taken two weeks to sail from
the United Kingdom to New York City .
Greta made the trip to attend a meeting
on climate change at the United Nations
( UN ). She spoke to the UN on September
, 2019 .
People may wonder why she did not y
on a plane , which would have taken hours
instead of days . ose people have a lot to
learn about this outspoken teenager and
what she stands for .

Greta has said Rosa Parks is one of her greatest
inspirations . Parks was a leader of the nonviolent civil
rights movement ( 1950s 1960s ), which fought for
equal rights for African Americans in the United States .

She was born in Stockholm ,
Sweden . Her mom is an opera
singer named Malena Ernman .
Ernman is well known in Sweden .
Gretas dad is Svante unberg .
He is an actor and author . Beata is
Gretas younger sister .

Greta had Aspergers syndrome .
It is a type of autism spectrum
disorder
( ASD ). Many people
with it have strong verbal skills
and are very smart . Many are
able to focus intensely on a task
until it is complete . ey oen have
a strong attention to detail too . But
some may have problems with
being social and talking to others .
Greta has had these strengths
and challenges her whole life . She
has felt invisible because she is
shy . It is not easy for her to talk
with people .
