A teenager walks to her classroom . She
opens the door with a wave of her hand .
Her eyes zoom in on the lesson plan on
the whiteboard . She hears her friend
walking into the building , rooms away .
ey plan to change their eye colors for a
party this weekend .
What if this could be true ? An average
human ear can only hear a small part
of all the sounds around it . Human
eyes can see only a small portion of
all light . Transhumanists want
to improve these abilities , and more .
ey want to evo lve the human race
using technology .
Biohacking is one way this might
happen . Biohacking is the practice of
changing the body . Most biohackers
change themselves without the help of
doctors . ey add technology to their
bodies , change their DNA , or supercharge
their lifestyle . e goal is to improve the
performance of the body or brain.
transhumanist : someone who believes that
humans , using science and technology ,
can go beyond their current physical and
mental capabilities
evolve : to develop gradually and become
more complex
BIOHACKERS
Some biohackers have surgery .
Technology is implanted into
their bodies . ese people call
themselves grinders or cyborgs .
ere may be up to 100,000 of them
in the world .
Biohacking implants are made
by small companies , or by grinders
themselves . ey can be anything
from electronic tattoos on the skin
to computer chips under the skin .
Some implants improve existing
abilities , such as hearing . Some give
new ones , such as echolocation .
Grinders get implants for many
dierent reasons . ey might want
help with a disability . If they cannot
easily use their hands , a chip can
unlock doors for them . ey might
want to make life more convenient .
ey can just wave at a payment
machine to pay for coee . Or they
might just think its cool .
implant : to place something new inside
the body , usually with a medical procedure
echolocation : being able to locate objects
by reflected sound ; bats use echolocation
to locate their prey
BIOHACKERS
One popular implant is an RFID chip . RFID stands for radio
frequency identication. Key cards for oce buildings have them .
Credit cards have them too . e chips have no battery . ey are
powered by the machines that read them .
A syringe inserts RFID chips into the skin of the hand or wrist .
Usually a body artist or the user themself does it . e chips are only
the size of a grain of rice . Inserting them is quick and painless . ey are
very popular in Sweden . Having one inserted costs about $180 there .
