It was a crisp September morning in Troy ,

Alabama . The sun had not yet risen to warm the

autumn air as John tiptoed to the chicken coop ,

schoolbooks clutched in his arms . He knelt to

stroke his favorite hen behind the head . Can you

keep a secret , Bitsy ? Im going to school today .

Mama and Daddy say they need me to stay and
