Trust Me, PR is Dead: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Trust Me, PR is Dead" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Robert Phillips spent twenty-five years at the top of the Public Relations industry, travelling the world to speak alongside Prime Ministers and CEOs (in between presenting naked in Finnish boardrooms saunas and trying to bring an end to the British monarchy).

But then he quit his job as CEO EMEA of Edelman the worlds largest PR firm for one simple reason: he no longer believed in what he was doing.

Messages can no longer be managed. The age of spin is over.

In this age of activism and individual empowerment, power is shifting from state to citizen; employer to employee; corporation to citizen-consumer. From media to publishing, law to diplomacy, and internal communications to leadership itself, traditional industries are facing a near inevitable demise.

How can the PR industry be so seemingly unaware that it is experiencing its own death throes? And if everything is dead, what comes next?

Using nearly 200 anecdotes, interviews, and case studies (including companies like Unilever, John Lewis Partnership, and Patagonia), Robert Phillips answers these questions and proposes a new model of leadership and accountability across business and politics.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Robert Phillips quit his job as President and CEO, EMEA of Edelman, the worlds largest Public Relations firm, for reasons that will become apparent as you read this book. Robert is a Visiting Professor at Cass Business School and co-founded Jackie Cooper PR.

LETTER FROM UNBOUND

Dear Reader,

The book you are holding came about in a rather different way to most others. It was funded directly by readers through a new website: Unbound.

Unbound is the creation of three writers. We started the company because we believed there had to be a better deal for both writers and readers. On the Unbound website, authors share the ideas for the books they want to write directly with readers. If enough of you support the book by pledging for it in advance, we produce a beautifully bound special subscribers edition and distribute a regular edition and e-book wherever books are sold, in shops and online.

This new way of publishing is actually a very old idea (Samuel Johnson funded his dictionary this way). Were just using the internet to build each writer a network of patrons. Here, at the back of this book, youll find the names of all the people who made it happen.

Publishing in this way means readers are no longer just passive consumers of the books they buy, and authors are free to write the books they really want. They get a much fairer return too half the profits their books generate, rather than a tiny percentage of the cover price.

If youre not yet a subscriber, we hope that youll want to join our publishing revolution and have your name listed in one of our books in the future. To get you started, here is a 5 discount on your first pledge. Just visit unbound.com, make your pledge and type trustm3 in the promo code box when you check out.

Thank you for your support,

DISCLAIMER

The views stated in this book are mine and mine alone. Often they are strongly expressed as I feel passionately about the issues I discuss. But that is the beauty of free speech. Where necessary, I have altered names and identifying details. Occasionally, I have used redactions (those big black block things) to ensure that the person or event is not identifiable. This is because I do not want the personal to detract from the political. The points I want to make are not based on who or what did something, but on why it was done in the first place. Hopefully this will enhance, rather than hinder, your reading experience.

CENSORS NOTE

You cannot write that.

Why not? Its the truth.

It may well be the truth, but that doesnt mean you wont get sued.

Isnt there a certain irony in a book about the end of PR not being able to tell the truth?

Yes.

Such are the perils of having a libel lawyer for a sister.

Be careful what you ask for (in this case an advance read of this book).

I owe a lot to my younger sister. For a start, she laughs at my jokes. We share the same dark sense of humour. We inadvertently provoked a giggling outbreak at our fathers funeral 30 years ago. The truth is, had he been alive and not in the coffin, John would have laughed with us. But the majority of mourners, who knew us less well, were shocked. They wanted to see the truth their way. Funerals were only for sadness and tears.

Truth somehow seems to hurt, and people struggle to see and tell it as it is.

Jane and I were 19 and 21 years old at the time. Our sense of truth then would serve as an anchor for both our future careers.

Jane emailed me after reading an early draft.

You cant say that.

Why not?

Because Picture 4 is notoriously litigious.

But thats exactly what happens. He always either arrives late or leaves early. Despite his success and his wealth, he is obviously desperate to get noticed.
