Abstract
SMART BUSINESSES IN THE 21ST CENTURY will be those that are best at adapting to changing societal concerns, expectations, risks and opportunities and that know how to generate sustainable outcomes. To be one of these smart businesses you need Smart Engagement. While many companies talk a lot about stakeholder engagement, few do it in a way that genuinely contributes to business success. In many cases, companies engage the wrong people on the wrong issues at the wrong time; they take too long or not long enough planning, and too much or not enough time doing it; they slide into PR-mode and try to manage rather than engage; and they undermine relationships by creating expectations that will rarely be met or by investing in making decisions and activities few people want. This is not Smart Engagement. While there are a number of guidelines on engagement out there, there is little consensus on best practice and on how engagement should be integrated into core business. Smart Engagement is based on years of experience in the field and distils the best from current research and practice guidance. What sets it apart is its straightforward, no-nonsense approach. It focuses on results and creating value; it is not an abstract process guideline.
