    Its twelve oclock at night on December 31st, and its the start of a new year in Britain.

    New Years Eve

    December 31st is New Years Eve. Many people go to parties with their friends. At twelve oclock, they stand together and they sing a song called Auld Lang Syne. The words are a poem by a Scottish man, Robert Burns. A lot of people dont understand the Scottish words, but they like the song. Its about old friends.

    Other people are in the streets. In London, people listen to the citys famous clock, Big Ben, at twelve oclock. There are a lot of fireworks, too, above Big Ben, the London Eye, and the River Thames.

    Hogmanay

    In Scotland, New Year has a different name: Hogmanay. Hogmanay is very important in Scotland. There are parties in the streets of many towns and cities. At twelve oclock, people go to other peoples homes with a present. The first person through the door in the new year brings good luck to the home.

    A lot of people go to bed very late, and they dont get up early on New Years Day January 1st. But some people go to rivers and seas in the morning, and they swim. Sometimes, they wear funny costumes! The water is very cold, but that doesnt stop people.

    New habits

    On New Years Day, people think about the year in front of them and choose some changes to their lives. For example, a lot of people start new sports in January, or dont eat sweets and cakes. Can they keep their new habits all year? Sometimes its difficult!

    Who do you love? On Valentines Day, February 14th, you send a card to that person. Some people give flowers, chocolates, and other presents, too.

    Many people get a Valentines card from their husband or wife, or from their girlfriend or boyfriend. Others get a card with Love from ? in it. Whos it from? They dont know.

    Restaurants are busy that night, too. People go out for a nice meal with their favourite person.

    Mothers Day

    Mothers Day (or Mothering Sunday) is on a Sunday in March. It celebrates another kind of love: the love between mothers and their children. On this day, people say thank you to their mothers. Many young children make cards or presents, with help from their teachers or fathers. Other children bring breakfast to their mothers in bed, and some families have lunch in a restaurant. Mothers dont do a lot of work on Mothers Day.

    Two countries in the United Kingdom have important festivals in March. March 1st is St Davids Day, and Welsh people celebrate their love for Wales that day. Theres a big parade in the city of Cardiff, and there are small parades and festivals in many other places in Wales. You can see a lot of Welsh flags.

    People in the UK eat a lot of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. And pancakes need eggs. 22 million eggs go into pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Many people like chocolate, fruit or ice cream on pancakes.

    Pancake Day isnt only about the food. Its about races, too. People run with a pancake. Then they give it to another person in their team. You can see pancake races in many towns and cities in the UK.

    The day after Shrove Tuesday is Ash Wednesday. For Christians, this is the first day of the forty days of Lent. Some people dont eat sweets in Lent, or they stop a bad habit. It isnt easy!

    Ramadan

    One person in twenty in the UK is Muslim, and an important time of year for Muslims is Ramadan. Its a month long. Ramadan starts on a different date every year April 2nd in 2022, March 1st in 2025, and January 28th in 2028. In the month of Ramadan, only young children can eat or drink in the day. People above the age of about thirteen wait for the evening for food and drink. Many people stop their bad habits, too. They often feel tired and hungry in Ramadan.

    At the end of Ramadan, people celebrate with a big festival: Eid al-Fitr. A lot of Muslim people decorate their homes at Eid. Theres a big meal, too. Its a happy day! For many people, its their first meal in the daytime for a month. People wear nice clothes, and enjoy time with friends and family. Many Muslims give money to people with difficult lives at Eid, and they give presents to family and friends.

    About two months after Eid al-Fitr, theres another Muslim festival, Eid al-Adha. Again, people celebrate with family, friends and good food.

    April Fools Day

    Theres a fun tradition in the UK on the morning of April 1st. This day is April Fools Day, and its a day for tricks. Mothers and fathers trick their children, and children trick their brothers, sisters and friends. Some of the stories in newspapers and on TV arent true that day. Is there a story on TV about bread trees? An April fool thinks the story is true. Dont be an April fool!
