Historical Dictionary of Sri Lanka: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Historical Dictionary of Sri Lanka" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Sri Lanka has had a celebrated history, a long colonial past, and since independence in 1948 has passed through a series of crises and political experiments. It has had a remarkable record of voters turning out unpopular governments, often by sweeping margins. On 8 January 2015 voters again performed this feat when Maithripala Sirisena, representing a coalition of disparate parties, defeated Mahinda Rajapaksa for the presidency. Rajapaksa was turning the nation away from its democratic heritage towards authoritarianism and militarism. Independent Sri Lankas economy stagnated for decades before it began to grow in the 1980s. It has had significant economic growth since the end of the 26-year war against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2009. Although reconciliation between the Sinhalese Buddhist majority and Hindu, Muslim and Christian minorities seems distant, prospects for Sri Lanka seem better than they have been for decades.
The Historical Dictionary of Sri Lanka contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Sri Lanka.

The historical dictionaries present essential information on a broad range of subjects, including American and world history, art, business, cities, countries, cultures, customs, film, global conflicts, international relations, literature, music, philosophy, religion, sports, and theater. Written by experts, all contain highly informative introductory essays of the topic and detailed chronologies that, in some cases, cover vast historical time periods but still manage to heavily feature more recent events.

Brief AZ entries describe the main people, events, politics, social issues, institutions, and policies that make the topic unique, and entries are cross-referenced for ease of browsing. He ran for president in the 1989 elections as a candidate of the United Socialist Alliance but won only 4.63 percent of the vote. Kumaratunga was a target of the insurgency of 19881990 and escaped several assassination attempts. He had been a leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party but left after losing a by-election for Parliament in 1983 and clashing with his brother-in-law Anura Bandaranaike. He was killed in the suicide bombing that killed Gamini Dissanayake on 24 October 1994.

ABEYSEKERA, SUNILA (19522013)

Sunila Abeysekera was a pioneer in the womens movement in Sri Lanka and in South Asia. She was an actress and became involved in trade unionism and political activism in the late 1970s. She led civil society organizations, working for a negotiated political solution to the ethnic conflict. Abeysekera left Sri Lanka in 1987 after she received death threats and witnessed the assassination of a colleague but soon returned. She documented human rights abuses and brought them before the international community. She concentrated on civilians living in war-affected areas, womens rights, and sexual and reproductive rights, including the rights of sex workers, people living with
