Small Groups for the Rest of Us: How to Design Your Small Groups System to Reach the Fringes: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Small Groups for the Rest of Us: How to Design Your Small Groups System to Reach the Fringes" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Most churches in America struggle to have a significant percentage of their adult attendance in small groups. According to recent research done by Lifeway Research, only 33 percent of churchgoers attend classes or groups for adults (such as Sunday school, Bible study, small groups, or Adult Bible Fellowships) four or more times in a typical month. Fourteen percent attend two or three times a month.

Life transformation happens best within the context of community, so if a church is going to be intentional about discipleship they have to develop on-ramps to small groups that reach people on the fringes and beyond. If we continue to offer small groups to the normal church attenders, a majority of the people who show up to church are never reached.

Pastors, church staff and small group leaders are trying to figure out how to make small groups work in their church and they dont know how. Small Groups For The Rest Of Us gives them practical, proven strategies on moving people from the fringes into biblically based communities.

JON ACUFF - NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF DO OVER, START AND STUFF CHRISTIANSLIKE

I am so thrilled Chris Surratt has put his ideas and many years of ministry and groupexperience down on paper. Small Groups for the Rest of Us is a thoughtful and helpfulbook for any ministry leader, but especially for those of us in the trenches leadingthe small-group initiative at our churches. Each chapter is chocked full of wisdomwith helpful insights on how to create an intentional and thriving small-group ministry.Chapter 2, Reaching the Fringes, is worth the entire price of the book. Read it,digest it slowly, and implement it fully. Its that good.

BILL WILLITS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MINISTRY ENVIRONMENTS, NORTH POINT MINISTRIES,CO-AUTHOR OF CREATING COMMUNITY

As I read this book, I kept thinking over and over again, Man! I wish Id writtenthis book! And Man! I wish Id had this book thirty years ago! Small Groups ForThe Rest of Us is a book not just for the rest of us, but for all of us. At Saddleback,we say that a healthy small group is one that seeks to fulfill the Great Commissionand the Great Commandment. We equip them to develop health by balancing the fivebiblical purposes. This book, in their hands, will help make their group healthier. It doesnt matter what system of groups you are trying to work, or whether you havea system at all. This book will challenge how you think, who you reach, and the powerof biblical community to change lives. Youll laugh, youll cry, and youll get outof your comfortable chair to reach people nobody else is reaching... people Jesusloves. People just like you and me. People who are way different than you and me.People who desperately need life-giving relationships, just like you and me.

STEVE GLADEN, PASTOR OF THE SMALL GROUP COMMUNITY, SADDLEBACK CHURCH AUTHOR, SMALLGROUPS WITH PURPOSE & LEADING SMALL GROUPS WITH PURPOSE

You wont just read this; instead, youll feel as if youre shadowing Chris as henavigates every strategic decision required for building transformational groupsin a church. Loaded with ground-level wisdom that is refreshingly vulnerable, brutallyhonest, intensely practical, and readily transferable to your group ministry.

DR. BILL DONAHUE, AUTHOR OF THE IRRESISTIBLE COMMUNITY: AN INVITATION TO LIFE TOGETHER

When a groups pastor tells you that 90 percent of their adult membership is in asmall group, you can rest assured that person knows how to connect every type ofperson to a small group. If you want to do the same, buy this book, read this book, and make this book your handbook so you can, present every person mature in Christ(Colossians 1:28 NET).

leadnetorgNEXT I will never forget cramming about ten guys into my college - photo 2

I will never forget cramming about ten guys into my college dorm room at WesternKentucky University. Our college pastor, Rick Howerton, had challenged my roommateand me to get a group of friends together and start a small group. It sounded likea great idea... until there I sat in a circle with these ten guys looking backat me with blank stares, clearly wondering, So, what now?

Ill never forget just how ill equipped I felt to lead that group.

Well, amazingly enough, almost two decades later I still lead a small group. Almostevery week a group of adults gather in our living room to laugh, cry, study, andshare life together. I feel a lot more comfortable these days, but I still have mymoments of anxiety, uncertainty, and even (if Im really honest) dread. Thats whyIve been eager to get my hands on this book. I think all of us who lead a groupor groups ministry know that ministry in the small-group setting is important, essential, and working. I also think we believe just as strongly that something is often missing,it could be better, and we need help to take things to the next level.
