Introduction

V olodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy has been well known in Ukraine and Eastern Europe for quite a long time. However, the rest of the world came to know him better when Russia began an invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

He was a former actor and comedian and became the sixth incumbent president of Ukraine. He grew up in central Ukraine in a large city called Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. He is a native Russian speaker, as well as being able to speak Ukrainian and several other languages.

Before he began his acting career, he got a degree in law from the Kyiv National Economic University. After graduating with his degree though, he began to pursue comedy and he wanted to produce cartoons, films, and TV shows. He eventually created the production company Kvartal 95.

The most popular show he created from his production company was Servant of the People. In this show, he actually acted as the president of Ukraine. It aired for four years from 2015 to 2019 and was one of the most-watched shows in Ukraine during that time.

In March 2018, Kvartal 95 created a political party also called Servant of the People. Shortly after in December 2018, Zelenskyy announced he would be running for president for the 2019 election. He was a political outsider and many people wondered if he would succeed, but he became one of the top runners in the opinion polls for the election very early on.

He defeated the other president who was running by 73.23 percent of the vote. Defeating then president Petro Poroshenko was a big deal and surprised many people, but the people of Ukraine were wanting a change in leadership.

Many people voted for him because of his views on anti-establishment and anti-corruption. He supports e-government and wants to provide more opportunities for unity between the Ukrainian-speaking parts of the country and the Russian-speaking part of the country.

Unlike other presidents of Ukraine before him, he uses social media to communicate and make his viewpoints clear. During a snap legislative election, he also won a large majority of the popular vote. He has done many different things during his time as president, but most people applaud him for lifting the legal immunity of the members of Verkhovna Rada.

He also had a swift response to the COVID-19 pandemic which kept his citizens safe and secure during the worst of the outbreaks. After the lockdown, Ukraine, like many other countries faced an economic recession. Zelenskyy was able to create new jobs and keep the country stable despite the recession that most of the world was facing.

He has also worked to tackle corruption in Ukraine since many of the former government leaders allowed for bribery and other forms of being able to work around the laws that should be being implemented.

Before the invasion from Russia started, Zelenskyy also wanted to end the constant conflict that they were experiencing with Russia, and he wanted to make sure there was always open dialogue with Russias president, Vladimir Putin.

Despite his push to end the conflict with Russia, tensions increased throughout the year of 2021. In February 2022, Putin launched a full-scale Russian invasion. Despite the invasion, Zelenskyy tried to calm his people and wanted the rest of the world to know that Ukraine was not interested in starting a war that would kill millions of people.

He tried to distance himself from the conflict at the beginning, but he also wanted to call on NATO and other military support from around the world in case he needed it as the conflict got worse. Once the invasion started though and got worse, he mobilized all the troops of the Ukrainian military and declared that martial law be in effect.

His leadership during the conflict has been admired all over the world and many civilians from other countries show their support to him on social media and on the internet.

Z elenskyy was born on January 25, 1978 in Kryvyi Rih. At this time, this city was part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. It was an industrial city in central Ukraine.
