This book project has been a personal discovery and, in the process, I have accumulated a debt of gratitude to a variety of people and institutions. To my wife, Dagmar, I am eternally grateful for her unfailing support and encouragement to complete this project, especially when the tormenting stress, but equally joyous and rewarding life of parenthood, was sometimes unbearable. To Daniel Tmou and Ella Agnes Amani, I owe you my peace and happiness, and my humble thanks for giving me a new lease of life. And to Gerhard and Ella Waiblinger, my gratitude for providing the space to complete this manuscript, and in particular, Ella's supply of cakes made the stressful completion of this project humane and rather healthy.
I also owe a debt of gratitude to my commissioning editor, Kirstin Howgate for her understanding and patience with my inability to meet previous deadlines. Let me take this opportunity to acknowledge the indirect contributions of the Geneva-based UN-affiliated University for Peace Africa programme, the Bruges-based United Nations University-Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU/CRIS) programme, and the British Council-DFID Higher Education Links programme for not only providing access to and networks with African academics and policy practitioners, but also the opportunities for quasi-research field visits for this book project.
In the writing of this book, I have been entertained by and debated with a vast number of students, in particular, postgraduate and research students, and academics in Europe and Africa. To them, I am grateful for helping to clarify my thoughts on some of the critical and controversial issues addressed in this manuscript. Similarly, I owe a debt of gratitude to the researchers and officers at the African regional organisations and economic groupings, in particular, ECOWAS, SADC, CEWARN, AU, COMESA, and IGAD, for providing access to valuable documents and sharing their views on the potential role and contribution of regionalism to the maintenance of peace and security in Africa.
The technical aspects for the completion of this manuscript would have been a tortuous process, but for the efficiency and technical expertise of Eriko Otaki and Judy Wall, both Research Assistants at the Africa Centre. To them, I owe a special debt of gratitude. In addition, I am grateful for the academic debates with my colleagues at the Africa Centre, as they provided the singular opportunity to reject some of my underdeveloped and unfocused ideas. And, above all, I am simply thankful to my God and saviour Jesus Christ for making this project a reality.
