Peter Scourfield has practised social work in a variety of settings with diverse service user groups since qualifying as a social worker in 1984. Before moving full time into social work education his most recent social work practice was in a team for older people and people with physical disabilities. Since being in social work education Peter has been a course leader on a MA Social Work programme; practice educator and lecturer and tutor on different undergraduate, post-qualifying and fast track courses. Peters PhD was focused on older peoples experiences in the social care system. However, he has diverse research and writing interests in both social work and social policy and has written on subjects ranging from professional leadership in social work to older peoples experiences of Tai Chi. Peter is currently a Visiting Fellow at Anglia Ruskin University. He has previously published two social work textbooks.

Mainly I would like to thank my wife, Jean, for all the logistical support she provided whilst I was writing this book. Many brains were picked in trying to ensure that I was on top of the current policy and practice in diverse areas of social work. However, a particular thank you needs to go to Claire Howell who provided me with many insights into advocacy in children and families social work.
Different forms of advocacy have existed for centuries. However, if you ask someone what they think advocacy is you will soon find that it means different things to different people in different contexts. It can be an elusive concept to pin down. Nevertheless, advocacy is an important concept to know about in social work for different reasons. For one, professional guidance not only specifies that social workers are expected to be able to advocate on behalf of service users, but also states that they need to know when to refer service users to appropriate independent advocates. In fact, the emergence of formal independent advocacy roles in recent years has meant that social workers are more and more likely to be working alongside and sometimes challenged by independent advocates in their practice. Therefore, understanding the roles and responsibilities of different independent advocates and the codes of practice and principles by which they work is of vital importance in all areas of social work.
