Science, Technology, and the Issues of the Eighties: Policy Outlook
edited by Albert H. Teich and Ray Thornton for the American Association for the Advancement of Science
Recognizing that science and technology have become increasingly relevant to important public policy issues, Congress has mandated the periodic preparation of a Five Year Outlook for Science and Technology to help U.S. policymakers anticipate and deal with these issues more effectively. This book, the result of a study conducted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science for the second such Outlook, identifies and explores domestic and international policy concerns in which science and technology are critical factors. The authors interdisciplinary, nontechnical approach provides policymakers, students and others interested in science, technology and public affairs with a timely overview of nine areas that are likely to become the worlds most pressing concerns during the next several years.
Dr. Teich is manager of science policy studies at AAAS and project manager of AAASs Five Year Outlook Project. Prior to joining AAAS, he was associate professor and deputy director of the Graduate Program in Science, Technology and Public Policy at George Washington University. He is coauthor of Research and Development: AAAS Reports V and VI (1980 and 1981) and editor of Scientists and Public Affairs (1974) and Technology and Mans Future (3rd ed., 1981). Mr. Thornton is president of Arkansas State University. He was chairman of the AAAS Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy. He served as attorney general of Arkansas and was elected to three consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. While in Congress he was a member of the House Committee on the Judiciary and chairman of the Subcommittee on Science, Research and Technology.
