Social Research in Health and Illness
Social Research in Health and Illness offers a theoretically informed guide to practising the key social research methods in investigating health and illness. Examining both methods and methodology, the authors explore the importance of selecting the appropriate research method for the project in question, demonstrating that researchers do not simply apply a set of neutral techniques to the issues that they investigate, but take part in a dynamic, reflective engagement with social and cultural worlds in a process of continual learning.
With its application of a variety of research methods to concrete cases, this book provides a sociology of specific health conditions, thus rendering them more understandable, while clarifying the nature of research concepts, approaches, methods and methodologies by demonstrating their use in real-life settings. Drawing on case studies involving a range of health conditions, including mental illness, HIV, diabetes, kidney disease, Alzheimers disease, heart disease, breast cancer, thalassaemia and multiple sclerosis, the authors examine a range of methodological issues, exploring the use of focus groups, observation, data archives, interviews and surveys, while also considering questions of ethics and analysis.
A comprehensive and practical examination of research methods in use in a defined field of social scientific enquiry, this volume is essential reading for scholars, graduate students and healthcare professionals with interests in conducting qualitative and quantitative research in the fields of health and medicine.

I would like to congratulate the authors on providing a very insightful and practical book for those interested in conducting empirical research to investigate health and illness in human populations. The Introduction presents the philosophical grounds of quantitative and qualitative research, while each chapter unfolds with a case study to capture the medical focus of the text that follows in order to enable the reader to identify with a real-life scenario. Each case is theoretically informed and adopts an appropriate methodological strategy to carefully address specific research questions. A strong applied thread runs through the suitability of each methodological approach that is adopted to tackle each real-life scenario.
The book begins with how to do a literature review and concludes with a final chapter on ethics. These important chapters top and tail nine interwoven expositions of the following applications: the social survey, qualitative interviewing, the focus group, ethnographic observation, coding and analysis, Internet research, and the value of combining both quantitative and qualitative methods, concluding with use of existing data. The authors succeed in presenting the reader with a rich source of further reading for new and existing health researchers to reflect upon the application of each method. The book will appeal to health research trainers, their students and a wider constituency of health professionals who are interested in the business of doing research in the context of health and illness.

Research relates to ways of understanding reality. There are two important questions to consider here: what and how to know about this reality. What to know relates to ontological approaches, such as realism and idealism (Ormston et al.
