Sport and Violence: Rethinking Elias
The aim of this book is to discuss Norbert Eliass theory, but not to refute it. Tendentiously, the theory works in spite of its weaknesses, and it has been enriched by a number of authors over time. The objective of this volume is to discuss the blind spots and, more simply, what is too often taken for granted: namely the obvious pacifying effect of sports and/or produced by sports. This analysis has been guided by two perspectives. The sociological perspective questions the naturalization of sport, which is also the naturalization of the wildlings that have to be civilized. The other perspective comes from philosophical anthropology and attempts to comprehend the long-term characteristics of this union or disunion of sport and violence.
Going from educational theory to political science, from sports history to urban history, this book brings together complementary studies on the interrelation between sport and urban space in a European context.
This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport.
Dominique Bodin is Professor of Sociology at the University of Paris Est Crteil (ESPE de Crteil), France and member of the Laboratory LIRTES (http://lirtes.u-pec.fr). His works deal with the relations linking sport and violence through two main prisms: sport as a place for the dramatization of violence and sport as a way to control this violence.
Luc Robne is Professor of History at the University of Bordeaux, France and member of Laboratory THALIM (http://www.thalim.cnrs.fr). His works deal with the history of cultural practices through three main axes: the history of aeronautics, the history of the body, the knowledge and techniques of the body, including the history of violence, and the history of popular music.
