POLITICS AND PURGES IN CHINA
A classic of its genre just got better. Teiwess timely revision ensures that Politics and Purges will remain an essential part of every Sinologists reference collection.
Richard Baum, University of California, Los Angeles
Politics and Purges provides a major contribution to our understanding of the pre-Cultural Revolution politics in China and its re-publication is a most welcome event. It is all the more welcome because of the lucid new introduction that provides a masterful reassessment of Teiwess own earlier views and those of other recent scholarship. The main conclusion still stands that politics in the period 19491965 should be understood in terms of a dominant Mao rather than two-line struggle or the various western permutations of this Chinese formulation.
The new introduction reveals even more strongly a politics at Maos Court in which senior leaders try to second guess Mao, adjust their preferences to his desires, and try to exploit his ambiguities to advance bureaucratic and political interests. This new introduction offers an admirable model for how the new sources and interviews with Chinese scholars and participants can bring Chinese politics to life by helping us to understand better the motivations of individual players in the political process. Taken together, the original book and the new introduction are a powerful tour de force that will ensure that this remains the standard work covering the period.

About the Author
After the limited run first edition of Politics and Purges in China quickly sold out, Douglas Merwin of M.E. Sharpe and I discussed on various occasions the possibility of a paperback edition with the aim of bringing the book to a larger audience. While I was disappointed that commercial and technical considerations prevented this from happening, as is so often the case this disappointment turned out to be a blessing in disguise. With the passage of time a rich vein of new material has become available which allows both a reevaluation of the arguments of Politics and Purges and a deeper understanding of the processes behind the events examined in the book. I am grateful to Doug for reviving the project at a time when new insights are possible, and I have attempted both to reexamine and extend the earlier analyses of the pre-Cultural Revolution period in the lengthy introduction to this second edition.
Of all the people contributing to the new section of this volume, one stands out. Warren Sun not only provided the tireless wide ranging services normally thought of as research assistance, he also repeatedly engaged me on points of interpretation, made fruitful suggestions on where the original draft manuscript could be expanded and deepened, and in countless ways helped me refine my understanding of the events and processes under study. I am deeply appreciative of his help.
A number of other people assisted in various ways. Lucien Bianco, Anita Chan, Timothy Cheek, Bruce Dickson, Keith Forster, David Goodman, Carol Hamrin, Nancy Hearst, Bruce Jacobs, Roderick MacFarquhar, Mary Mazur, Tony Saich, Susan Shirk, K. K. Shum, Dorothy Solinger and Graham Young provided comments on the draft and/or generously shared their own research findings or sources. Thanks are due them all.
