The idea behind this book is to shed light on Putins Russia through a case study of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The games highlight many of the triumphs and tragedies of contemporary Russia and we hope to use the nearly universal appeal of the Olympics to shine a light on an important aspect of international politics, namely the way Russias political system works under President Vladimir Putin.
This book has been a long time coming. Our original plan was to publish it before the Olympics even took place, hoping to take advantage of the hype surrounding the games when people around the world would tune into the planets greatest sporting extravaganza. However, we missed that deadline and many others. We finally finished more than two years after the closing ceremonies. Viewed from this vantage point, given the growing doping scandal surrounding Russia in summer 2016, the legacy of the games is beginning to evolve and new questions are starting to arise. It may be many years before we have the full account and can put the Sochi games into their proper context.
We certainly enjoyed the process of writing the book, which required many hours spent in the cafes of Washington, DC, discussing the vicissitudes of Russian politics over strong coffee and tasty pastries. Such things are the joys of life, as were reading a variety of other stories about the Olympics which mixed politics and sport. Among our favourites were David Maranisss Rome 1960: The Summer Olympics that Stirred the World (2008), Daniel James Browns The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics (2013) and Richard Askwiths Today We Die a Little! The Inimitable Emil Zatopek, the Greatest Olympic Runner of all Time (2016).
Even before the book was published, it received some attention when it was mentioned in Stephen Lee Myers article about Sochi in The New York Times Magazine (Myers, 2014). This prominent citation gave us encouragement to keep going.
