During the course of the work, I was privileged to participate in, and to draw ideas and information from, the meetings of the Trilateral Commission, the Korea-Japan Intellectual Exchange, the European-Japanese Conference (Hakone VI), the Thai-Japanese Conference, and a series of meetings and workshops of Asia Dialogue, many of which were ably organized by the Japan Center for International Exchange.

This book would not have been possible without the extraordinarily generous contribution of Brian Bridges, whose knowledge of the region, skilful research and, above all, friendship were an incalculable asset thoughout the endeavour. Also, it would not be half as presentable as it is without the superb expertise and attention to detail which were applied to it by Pauline Wickham, who travelled all the way to Tokyo for two months of vigorous editing.
