Foreword
Welcome to the Post-Qualifying Social Work Practice Guides by Learning Matters. We have designed these guides to be full of practical tasks, ideas and guidance, making them ideal for the busy social worker, or indeed those training to be social workers. It is our sincere desire that they help the social work profession to reach even higher standards and ultimately benefit people who use services, and carers.
As part of the Post-Qualifying Social Work Practice series, these Practice Guides have been written by people with a passion for excellence in social work practice. This publication is no different. The other books in the series may also be of value to you as they are written to inform, inspire and develop social work practice.
Dr Steven Keen and Professor Keith Brown (University of Bournemouth Centre for Post-Qualifying Social Work)
About the authors
Clare Seymour is a registered social worker. She is currently working with social work students as a practice educator, and as an external examiner.

CASE STUDY
Michaels story
One day, I came home to find two social workers in my living room. They always come in pairs so youre immediately outnumbered. Intimidating is putting it mildly, though later it was always me who was described as intimidating. Looking back, Id lost the battle the day they got involved in my life. The more I fought to keep my daughter, the more hostile they became and the more they looked for things to use against me. Nothing I could say or do made any difference as a parent, I was completely powerless.
My partner had left me with our seven-month-old daughter and before I realised what was happening the social workers decided she wasnt safe with me. They based everything on what theyd been told by her mother. They didnt check anything out there were no questions, no investigation, nobody talked to my neighbours or anyone who knew me, they took everything at face value and I was categorised and stereotyped from the start. Before I came to England I worked in security and Ive always been interested in martial arts, but apparently that made me a bad parent. How does owning a collection of ornamental knives make me a violent person? Even my dog was held against me, although hes never hurt anyone.
After my daughter was taken away, I went to a solicitor, who gave me a rundown of what would happen. However, he didnt tell me it would go on for two and a half years. I didnt realise that not all solicitors are experts in child law and Ive also learned that if youve got problems with the council, dont use a local solicitor. Theyre all pally with each other and after court the solicitors and social workers all went to lunch together. You feel completely left out on a limb.
