Preface and Acknowledgements
At the core of this book lie countless stories of young girls and women living in Britain who have experienced honour violence. Within the confines of the family home, they have been coerced into unwanted marriages, subjected to physical and psychological abuse, abducted, imprisoned and in some cases killed by those closest to them. Whether teenage school girls, university students, working professionals, mothers or wives, their accounts expose the reality of everyday life for victims of honour violence in Britains minority ethnic communities; a reality that often involves the systematic violation of individual freedoms, civil liberties and human rights.
Against this background, the book explores the personal experiences of female survivors of forced marriage and victims of honour killings as well as the prevailing public policy discourse underlying these phenomena. The volume features a wide range of often conflicting views from various stakeholders including policymakers, community leaders, grassroots service providers, scholars and those at the receiving end of honour transgressions. Such an array of voices and narratives will contribute to further the ever fluid debate on the honour question. The book not only unveils deep divisions between those at opposite ends of the honour violence ideological spectrum; but raises wider questions about minority group entitlements, legal pluralism and womens rights. In doing so, it ultimately highlights the gender equality challenges facing Britains particular brand of multiculturalism.
By shining a light on the private lives of victims and survivors of honour violence, the book provides unique insights into a complex web of patriarchal, social, cultural and religious influences shaping the unequal status enjoyed by male and female migrants to the detriment of the latter. It is such imbalances in power relationships that continue to see ordinary law-abiding members of the Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Indian Diasporas, among others, turn filicide and fratricide in the name of honour. Two honour killings in particular provided the motivation for this book, namely the murders of a 16-year-old British Pakistani school girl from Cheshire in 2003, and of a 20-year-old Iraqi Kurdish woman from South London in 2006. The book is thus dedicated to the memory of Shafilea Ahmed and Banaz Mahmod.
I would like to thank colleagues at Birkbeck College Library, University of London, for their assistance in locating relevant materials; particularly Bob Burns for helping me to navigate through the Law archives. Thanks are also due to academic peers for their helpful suggestions during the course of this project. I should like especially to thank Dr Anne Kershen for her generosity, patience and insightful comments to the manuscript, which have greatly benefited the volume. Thanks are also due to Claire Jarvis at Ashgate whose enthusiasm, continuing support and guidance have steered the book in the right direction. Colleagues from Ashgates editorial team have furthermore provided me with invaluable assistance during the production process. Lastly, I am indebted to my friends and family for their forbearance, especially my parents Adelaida and Rafael for their unconditional love and Nick for all the wonderful times through the years.
Sadly during the writing of the book, my beloved brother-in-law Juan Carlos passed away unexpectedly. He was an inspiration to us all, full of life and laughter. The eternal optimist, he made the most of what he had and triumphed over adversity time and again with a smile. He will be sorely missed and live on in all of us who knew him and loved him. I would therefore like to extend the dedication of the book both to Juan Carlos memory and to my sister Adela, his widow, for her love and fortitude. Unlike the many unhappy unions depicted in the book, Adela and Juan Carlos truly loved each other and enjoyed a long and blissfully happy marriage.
