Fuelled by a distrust of big media and the development of mobile technologies, the resulting convergence of journalism praxis (professional to alternative), workflows (analogue to multipoint digital) and platforms (PC to mobile), result in a 24-hour always-on content cycle. The information revolution is a paradigm shift in the way we develop and consume information, in particular the type we call news. While many see this cultural shift as ruinous, Burum sees it as an opportunity to utilize the converging information flow to create a galvanizing and common digital language across spheres of communication: community, education and mainstream media. Embracing the digital literacies researched in this book will create an information bridge with which to traverse journalisms commercial precarity, the marginalization of some communities, and the journalism school curricula.

Democratizing Journalism through Mobile Media
Fueled by a distrust of big media and the development of mobile technologies, the resulting convergence of journalism praxis (professional to alternative), workflows (analogue to multipoint digital) and platforms (PC to mobile) results in a 24-hour always-on content cycle. Embracing the digital literacies researched in this book will create an information bridge with which to traverse journalisms commercial precarity, the marginalization of some communities and the journalism school curricula.
This book from one of the pioneers of mojo storytelling is an excellent introduction to the possibilities and potential of the smartphone through its intersection with journalism. Filled with personal experience, practical advice and theoretical reflection, Burum has produced an invaluable resource for teaching and research.

Mojo, changing the world one story at a time.
Convergence and the proliferation of mobile technologies are resulting in unprecedented opportunities for citizens at grassroots levels, in particular those living in marginalized communities, to create and publish their own voice on a global stage. The same smart technologies and neo-journalistic literacies, also used by professional media, have potentially created a common digital language (CDL), between spheres of communication.
Based on Ivo Burums PhD research and more than 30 years of television experience this book describes the degree to which citizens and professionals can be taught to tell and publish empowering digital stories using just a smartphone. It distinguishes between citizen witness and citizen journalism and introduces a perspective on the philosophies and pedagogy that underpin mobile journalism praxis. Using a case study approach, this is the first book to chronicle an investigation into the development and implementation of common mobile journalism (mojo) literacies across spheres of communication: community education and media.
This work introduces the framework behind the creation of a more empowering manifestation of user-generated content (UGC), which is called user-generated stories (UGS). The multimedia knowledge required to create UGS empowers citizens with digital skills that transform their alternative voice into a more mainstream form. The same skills provide teachers and students with challenge-based alternatives to traditional literacy programs. Mojo offers print journalists a nonthreatening digital storytelling toolkit, which they can use to help bridge their digital divide.
The primary case study, introduced in the book, investigates the accessibility and potential benefits of introducing digital tools and skills in remote indigenous communities, in outback Australia. Supplementary studies, conducted in Australia and China, investigate mojos sustainability and relevance within the education sector. Further workshops, in Timor and the EU, describe mojos adaptability and the impact of introducing multimedia tools to print journalists to create and publish digital stories.
