The Encounters series sets out to explore diversity in language from a theoretical and an applied perspective. So the focus is both on the linguistic encounters, inequalities and struggles that characterize post-modern societies and on the development, within sociocultural linguistics, of theoretical instruments to explain them. The series welcomes work dealing with such topics as heterogeneity, mixing, creolization, bricolage, cross-over phenomena, polylingual and polycultural practices. Another high-priority area of study is the investigation of processes through which linguistic resources are negotiated, appropriated and controlled, and the mechanisms leading to the creation and maintenance of sociocultural differences. The series welcomes ethnographically oriented work in which contexts of communication are investigated rather than assumed, as well as research that shows a clear commitment to close analysis of local meaning making processes and the semiotic organisation of texts.

Mike Baynham is Emeritus Professor at the University of Leeds. His research focus includes language and migration and narratives of migration, including queer migration. With John Gray he has recently contributed a chapter entitled Narratives of queer migration to the Oxford Handbook of Language and Sexuality .

Necia Stanford Billinghurst is a sociolinguist and international development professional with expertise in migration and sub-Saharan Africa. Necia researches the interplay of multilingual practices in southern and northern spaces. Currently at the University of South Australia, she is investigating the lifelong linguistic agency of refugee-background women resettled in Australia.

Jan Blommaert was a Belgian sociolinguist and linguistic anthropologist, Professor of Language, Culture and Globalization and Director of the Babylon Center at Tilburg University, the Netherlands. He is the author of The Sociolinguistics of Globalization (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and Ethnography, Superdiversity and Linguistic Landscapes: Chronicles of Complexity (Multilingual Matters, 2013).

Mari DAgostino is a Full Professor of Italian Linguistics at the University of Palermo. She directs the School of Italian Language for Foreigners (ItaStra) and the 2nd level Masters (post MA) in Theory, Design and Didactics of Italian as L2/LS at the same university and has coordinated the PhD in Literary, Philological and Linguistic Studies. Maris interests focus on Italian sociolinguistics, migration and transnational communities, literacy education and second language learning for adults.

Anna De Fina is Professor of Italian Language and Linguistics and Chair of the Italian Department at Georgetown University. Her interests focus on narrative, discourse and identity, immigrant and transnational communities and superdiversity. Anna has published widely on a variety of sociolinguistics topics, from the discourse construction of identities to the use of media among transnational communities, from narratives in immigrant discourse to the role of ethnography in sociolinguistic research. Her latest publication is the Handbook of Discourse Studies , co-edited with Alexandra Georgakopoulou (Cambridge University Press, 2020).

Ana Deumert is Professor at the University of Cape Town. Her research program is located within the broad field of African sociolinguistics and has a strong transdisciplinary focus. She has worked on topics in historical sociolinguistics, the history of linguistics, sociolinguistic and decolonial theory, as well as digital communication.

Gomes O. Kayode is the founder of Love Planet , an LGBTQI organization for African asylum seekers and refugees, providing services and addressing issues relating to health, rights and social well-being with focus on LGBTQI, people with disability, people living with STI/HIV/AIDS, commercial sex workers and migrants/refugees. He is a blogger and filmmaker.
