Acknowledgments
Just before he died in 1936, Soviet physiologist and Nobel Prize winner Ivan Petrovich Pavlov warned young persons that science demands undivided allegiance and passion from its followers. In this volume I argue that part of this passion ought to be directed at the ethics of scientific research.
Much of the work in this book stems from original research (19841987), supported in part by the National Science Foundation, Ethics and Values Studies, under grant ISP-82-09517, "Ethical and Value Issues in Siting Radioactive Waste Facilities," and grant BBS-86-159533, "Normative Concepts in Ecology and their Consequences for Policy." This volume also arose as a result of evaluations of the research of others (19911993), supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy and the state of Nevada under grant 685873,9.3.7, 4-C, "Expert Judgment in Assessing Radwaste Risks." Any opinions expressed in this book, however, are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, or the Nevada Waste Project Office.
This volume is better than it might have been thanks to the constructive criticisms of Michael Davis, Robert Fullinwider, Paul Gomberg, and Earl McCoy. Their responses have been invaluable in improving what is written here. Any errors that remain are my responsibility.
Helen Longino, Carl Mitcham, and Carl Cranor deserve special thanks for their scholarly contributions to the book. Daniel Wigley and Sharon Ostermann also have done superb jobs, as research and editorial assistants. My greatest debt is to my family and especially our children, the research scientists of tomorrow. They can make a difference.

Issues in Academic Ethics
Academic life generates a variety of moral issues. These may be faced by students, staff, administrators, or trustees but most often revolve around the rights and responsibilities of the faculty. In my book Saints and Scamps: Ethics in Academia (Rowman & Littlefield), published in 1986 and revised in 1994, I set out to enumerate, explain, and emphasize the most fundamental of these professional obligations. To do justice to the complexities of academic ethics, however, requires the work of many scholars focused on numerous areas of investigation. The results of such an effort are embodied in this series.
Each volume concentrates on one set of connected issues and combines a single-authored monograph with sources chosen by the author to exemplify or amplify materials in the text. This format is intended to guide readers while encouraging them to develop and defend their own beliefs.
