ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to thank individually some of the teachers and students to whom I dedicate this book. Isaac Kramnick introduced me to the study of ideologies when I assisted in his course Liberalism and Its Critics at Cornell University. He is a superb teacher and his influence on me was profound. My thanks here for its subtler forms, which could not be cited and included in the text itself. I also want to thank my students at Pennsylvania State University. Those enrolled in my ideologies course tested these selections and evaluated my introductions to them. Rochelle Quiggle and Lisa Leipold provided valuable research assistance and helped, along with Tracey Dolan, Ellen Foley, Eric Georgette, and Regina Moore, to prepare the manuscript.
For a project such as this, staff support is especially important. Barbara Ayalla typed much of the text. Jo Ann Harris and Debbie Price took over at critical points when it seemed it would never be completed. Darlene Irby-Adesalu supervised the whole process with grace and good humor.
At Chatham House, my thanks to Nancy Benson, Chris Kelaher, Melissa Martin, and Katharine Miller for seeing this successfully through the production process and to Edward Artinian for his confidence in the project itself.
I would also like to thank the individuals and publishers who have kindly granted permission to include the following materials in this book:
